SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer program put together a complete team performance en route to a decisive 3-1 victory at San Jose State on Thursday night.
Annika Smith, Jessie Halladay and Madelyn Dougherty all found the back of the net as the Mustangs (2-0-5) secured their second straight victory and improved their unbeaten streak to seven matches, their third longest to start a season in program history.
"I felt like today was a big team win, everyone contributed to this one," head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match. "That's back-to-back performances where our concentration and attention to detail was on point for a full 90 minutes, and it showed."
Smith got the Mustangs on the board first on a sequence rarely seen. In the 26th minute, redshirt freshman Shannon Porubski blasted a ball from Cal Poly's 18-yard box all the way across midfield. The ball bounced a couple times and found a streaking Smith who snuck past a SJSU defender and created a one-on-one opportunity with the Spartans' goalkeeper. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native then got behind the keeper and blasted a shot into a wide-open net. It was Smith's third goal of the season and the 12th of her career, while Porubski earned a rare goalkeeper assist on the tally — the first point of her collegiate career.
"It was pretty cool to see a goalkeeper get an assist, that's special," Silva said.
Less than 10 minutes later, Cal Poly doubled its lead on an incredible individual effort by Halladay. After a corner kick sent in by the Mustangs was cleared out of the box, sophomore Ruby Casey sent it right back in toward the left side where Halladay tracked it down. The All-Big West Preseason Team selection played the ball between the legs of a defender, attacked the net and fired a shot from a tight angle into the goal. It was Halladay's fourth goal this season in just her fifth match and the 13th goal of her career. Casey, a transfer from Miami Ohio, earned an assist to register her first collegiate point.
"Jessie's goal was absolutely incredible," Silva said. "She's an absolute menace for defenders."
San Jose State cut Cal Poly's advantage in half in the 37th minute and the Mustangs took that 2-1 lead into halftime.
Cal Poly maintained control of the match throughout the second half and in the 71st minute added an insurance goal to seal the victory. Junior Kasia Wolf sent a free kick into the box from about 20 yards out and Dougherty rose up and headed the ball to the back of the net to make it 3-1 Mustangs. It was Dougherty's second straight match with a goal and her seventh point this season. Wolf recorded her first collegiate point on the tally.
The Mustangs finished with a 15-9 shot advantage in the match. Porubski, the reigning Big West Freshman of the Week, made three saves in her second straight start. A total of 21 Mustangs saw the field in the match.
Silva said he's extremely grateful for the Mustang faithful who showed up to the match and gave the team so much support in the Bay Area.
"We had an incredible crowd," he said. "It was so great to have that kind of love on the road … we're peaking at the right time as we near conference play."
Cal Poly hosts Cal at 1 p.m. Sunday at Spanos Stadium. Sunday's home match will serve as the first of three AYSO Appreciation days. Kids 13-and-under get free admission to the match as part of Sunday Funday. Tickets to the match can be purchased HERE.
