Cal Poly Remains Unbeaten with Scoreless Draw Against Cal

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer program earned its third clean sheet of the season with a scoreless draw against Cal on Sunday, remaining unbeaten through eight matches.
The Mustangs (2-0-6) now have six draws this season, tied for their most in a single season in program history. Cal Poly's current eight-match unbeaten streak is its third longest to start a season in program history and its longest overall since ending the 2009 season on a nine-match unbeaten streak.
"I'm glad that the defense was able to get a shutout," senior defender Camryn Penn said after the match, "that's not easy to do, but obviously we wanted to get a win out of that game … we definitely had moments, especially in the first 30 minutes of the first half with them getting a red card that we were unable to capitalize on."
In the 14th minute, Cal defender Malia McMahon was given a red card for pulling down and denying senior forward Jessie Halladay a goal scoring opportunity just outside the penalty area. On the ensuing free kick, Halladay curled the ball just wide of the left post.
With the Golden Bears playing the rest of the match a player down, Cal Poly tried its best to take advantage of a shorthanded Cal side.
In the 54th minute, junior Annika Smith sent a blast from the left side toward the top of the net that Cal goalkeeper Teagan Wy poked over the net and out of danger.
Halladay was responsible for arguably Cal Poly's most dangerous chance of the match in the 69th minute. She received a beautiful pass from senior midfielder Julia Moore from just over 10 yards in front of the goal and fired a shot that the Cal keeper reached up and got a hand on to steer it clear of danger.
The Mustangs earned one last dangerous chance in the 83rd minute when Smith forced the Cal keeper to make a kick save and Moore sent the rebound just over the net.
Cal Poly finished with a 15-12 shot advantage in the match, firing seven on frame. Halladay registered a team-high six shots.
"A 0-0 draw against Cal is a good result because Cal's a really good team," head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, "… but we're a bit disappointment because of the circumstances of the game."
Making her third consecutive start in net, redshirt freshman Shannon Porubski secured two saves to grab her second clean sheet of the season. She currently has a .909 save percentage and 0.33 goals against average across three matches this season.
"The shutouts are essential," Silva said. "We're a team that has a lot of pride in how we defend … so massive shutout to the backline and massive shutout to Shannon. I thought Sophia [Minnite] was fantastic as the holding midfielder as well as the six."
Halladay, Penn, Minnite, senior Brennan Cole and redshirt sophomore Siena Urzua never stepped off the pitch in the match.
Currently, Cal Poly is one of just 25 teams in Division I who has yet to be beaten this season.
We're still undefeated, so there's a lot of positives to that," Silva said. "We're really gritty and a really hard team to beat … I think we're going to take the lessons we learned today and continue to elevate the program."
Cal Poly remains at Spanos Stadium to host its final nonconference match of the season next Sunday, Sept. 14, against Seattle at 7 p.m. The match will serve as the Mustangs' Senior Night and you can purchase tickets HERE.
