LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A goal from graduate student Madelyn Dougherty in the 17th minute was the difference as the Cal Poly women's soccer team secured its first win of the season on Sunday, taking down UNLV 1-0 at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The victory allowed the Mustangs to remain unbeaten on the year (1-0-5) through six matches, the third longest unbeaten streak to open a season in program history. Cal Poly started the season with five straight draws.
"This is a really special one," Bernardo Silva said after securing his first win as the program's head coach, "… but this isn't about me, it's about an elevation of a program. Our girls have been working incredibly hard with the staff to inch closer and closer for us to get the three points and we got it done today in some really adverse conditions. I'm just really proud of everyone."
Cal Poly scored the lone goal of the match in the 17th minute when senior Jessie Halladay found Dougherty, who fired a shot to the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
It was Dougherty's first goal as a Mustang and fourth in her collegiate goal. The Kula, Hawai'i native transferred to Cal Poly over the offseason after serving as a three-year starter in the midfield at Sacramento State. Through six matches as a Mustang, Dougherty has registered one goal and three assists, with four of those points coming in Cal Poly's last two matches.
"Madee made a great run on the weak side and was able to get her toe on it," Silva said about the goal. "It's a game of inches, and we talked with our team that we're going to have to leave it all out there and Madee did that on that specific play … I'm really happy for her, she had a great week."
Halladay registered her second assist of the season on the tally and now has eight points (three goals, two assists) on the year.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shannon Porubski made her first collegiate start in net in the match and made the most of it.
After Cal Poly carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, Porubski did everything she could in the final 45 minutes to ensure the Mustangs walked away with the victory, making several key saves.
Porubski secured four saves in the second half with her most impactful one coming in the 63rd minute when she reached up and pushed a shot headed toward the top left corner of the net off the top of the crossbar and out of danger.
Porubski finished with five saves to earn her first career clean sheet and Cal Poly's second this season.
"I was given an opportunity today," Porubski said after the match, "and anytime any of us are given an opportunity it's really important to just take it and make the most of it. Today we all put in a shift, and it meant a lot coming out of it with a win and a clean sheet."
Halladay and Dougherty each finished with three shots in the match. Senior Julia Moore, a Long Beach State transfer, made her first start as a Mustang just three days after registering her first goal and point in a Cal Poly uniform in Thursday's 2-2 draw at Nevada. Freshman Sam Walker made her first collegiate start at outside back, playing all 90 minutes. Seniors Brennan Cole, Sophia Minnite and Camryn Penn, and redshirt sophomore Siena Urzua also never came off the pitch in the match.
Silva said he is looking forward to building off this victory.
"That clean sheet was a full team effort," he said. "I think every game up to this point the effort has been unquestionable. I think we are emptying the tank every single game, our attitude has been fantastic. I think today we were able to put together a 90-minute game full of concentration, paying attention to the details which I think is crucial for us to be able to win games."
Cal Poly completes a three-match road swing on Thursday at San Jose State before returning to Spanos Stadium next Sunday, Sept. 7, to host Cal at 1 p.m. You can purchase tickets to that match HERE.
