RENO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team scored two goals on set pieces, but was only able to secure a 2-2 draw at Nevada on Thursday night.
The tie was the Mustangs' (0-0-5) fifth straight, currently the longest active draw streak in Division I this season.
"I'm really proud of the 83 minutes that our girls were able to put together in a pretty challenge environment …but really disappointed about the last seven," head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match. "I feel like we keep extending the minutes that we are able to be disciplined and execute the game plan, but not enough to win the game."
Cal Poly was the aggressor early in Thursday's match and that persistence paid off in the first 15 minutes of the second half by way of a pair of perfectly-executed corner kicks.
Just over six minutes into the second half, graduate student Madelyn Dougherty sent a corner into the box that senior Jessie Halladay rose up and headed to the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It was Halladay's third goal of the season in just her third match.
In the 58th minute, Cal Poly earned another corner kick and capitalized once again. This time it was senior Julia Moore at the end of a beautiful booming corner from Dougherty. The Long Beach State transfer headed the ball in from the back post to double Cal Poly's advantage. Making her second appearance as a Mustang, Moore scored her first goal in a Cal Poly uniform and the ninth in her collegiate career.
The Mustangs clung to a 2-0 lead until the 86th minute when Nevada (1-1-1) finally got on the board. Just over two minutes later, the Wolf Pack scored again on a cross played into the box to level the match at 2-2.
Cal Poly outshot Nevada 10-4 in the first half and finished with a 14-10 shot advantage in the match. Dougherty's two assists on Thursday give her three on the season and six in her collegiate career.
Playing against her former team, redshirt junior goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki finished with five saves. Captains Sophia Minnite and Camryn Penn never stepped off the pitch, playing all 90 minutes.
"I think everybody is emptying the tank, everybody is working hard so I don't think it's a question of effort," Silva said, "but we need to execute for 90 minutes, it's pretty simple … we let up for seven minutes and Nevada's a good team and they'll punish you, so we're learning some really hard lessons right now."
Cal Poly has scored four of its nine goals this season directly off corner kicks.
The Mustangs continue their trip to Nevada on Sunday with a visit to UNLV. The match starts at 11 a.m. and can be watched live on YouTube.
