Cal Poly Earns Fourth Straight Draw, Tying Pacific 2-2
8/24/2025 7:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs recorded 27 shots — including 20 in the second half — and senior Brennan Cole and junior Annika Smith both found the back of the net, but the Cal Poly women's soccer team was only able to secure a 2-2 draw at home against Pacific on Sunday to remain unbeaten on the year.
It's Cal Poly's fourth straight draw (0-0-4), extending its program record for consecutive ties to open a season.
"We're trying to find a way to win a game right now, and I think this tie is probably the one that hurts the most," head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match. "We created enough chances to win the game … and right now for whatever reason it's there for the taking for us, but we haven't been able to pull it off."
For the second straight home match, the Mustangs struck first thanks to another early goal from Smith. Less than six minutes into the match, redshirt sophomore forward Bailey Bracha was able to steal the ball away from the feet of the Pacific goalkeeper inside the 18-yard box and feed a pass to Smith. The Scottsdale, Arizona native did the rest, sending a shot to the bottom left of the net for her second goal of the season to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. In last Monday's 2-2 home draw against BYU, Smith scored less than five minutes into the match. Making her second consecutive start, Bracha registered her second career assist on the tally and third point of the season.
The Tigers (1-2-1) responded in the 19th minute on an own goal by the Mustangs to level the match at 1-1.
In the 39th minute, sophomore Ashley Brewer nearly gave Cal Poly back the lead, heading the ball off the bottom of the crossbar following a cross into the box by senior Emily Lieber.
The Mustangs' continued pressure to find another goal finally paid off with a minute left in the first half. A corner kick sent into the box by sophomore Kiki Vostermans was headed out of the box by a Pacific defender. However, the ball fell right in front of senior Camryn Penn who sent the ball back into the box where Cole rose up and headed a shot to the back of the net to give Cal Poly a 2-1 lead at halftime. It was Cole's first goal of the season and third of her career. Penn registered her fourth career assist and first point of the season on the tally.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Pacific found another equalizer. On a corner kick, the Mustangs were called for a handball in the box allowing the Tigers' Taylor Curtis to step up and convert a penalty kick to level the match at 2-2.
Cal Poly spent the remainder of the match doing everything they could to find one last go-ahead goal. Bracha, Brewer, Cole, Smith, Vostermans and freshman Addie Crosno all registered shots on goal in the final 25 minutes of action, but it wasn't meant to be for the Mustangs.
"I think overall the game went pretty well," Smith said after the match, "we just couldn't finish our chances and just overall need better quality, but the effort was definitely there."
Cal Poly finished with a 27-12 shot advantage, firing 12 on frame. Smith had a team-high five shots and redshirt junior goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki made two saves in her fourth consecutive match.
Senior Julia Moore, a transfer from Long Beach State, made her first appearance as a Mustang after suffering a season-ending ACL injury last year with the Beach.
Next up, the Mustangs head to Nevada to begin a three-match road swing. Cal Poly takes on Nevada at 7 p.m. on Thursday before traveling to UNLV next Sunday, Aug. 31, for an 11 a.m. match.
As Cal Poly continues to search for its first win, Silva said some of the team's core values of family and sisterhood will help them remain strong through this adversity.
"When you go through a period where you're trying to figure out answers and find ways to win games, I think we got to stick together," he said. "We shared with the team that in these times our character gets tested, our core values get tested and so we got to stick together and look to bounce back."
