FRESNO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team secured its third straight tie to open the season on Thursday night, playing to a scoreless draw at Fresno State.
With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees at kickoff, the Mustangs fought tooth and nail to secure a hard-fought result on the road and remain unbeaten on the year (0-0-3).
"I thought the girls battled, I thought they dug deep," head coach Bernardo Silva said. "I thought we had our moments and chances to maybe squeak a win, but I also don't think we deserved a win tonight and I think that's important for us to understand that sometimes you're going to tie games."
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki made her third consecutive start in net and earned her first clean sheet as a Mustang and the fifth of her collegiate career. The Nevada transfer finished with eight saves in the match and was proud of the team's performance in a challenging match against a physical opponent.
"We obviously went into that game knowing it was going to be a hard battle," Szarlacki said after the match. "Travel day, coming into Fresno, 100-degree heat, like it wasn't going to be easy for us, but I think that we emptied the tank out there. We had chances on net but didn't put them away, but we got the clean sheet so I'm proud of my team for that."
Both of Cal Poly's starting centerbacks — senior Brennan Cole and redshirt sophomore Siena Urzua — made huge defensive plays to help keep the Bulldogs (0-0-2) off the board and preserve the shutout.
"I can't do everything by myself back there obviously," Szarlacki said, "it's why we have the defensive line and they just put their heart and soul into that and literally put their bodies on the line … to get us that clean sheet out there."
Graduate student Madelyn Dougherty, junior Annika Smith, redshirt sophomore Bailey Bracha and sophomore Avery Chaney all had dangerous looks at net throughout the match for the Mustangs, but were unable to capitalize.
Senior Emily Lieber made her first appearance since tearing her ACL in a match at Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 29, 2024. Bracha earned her first career start in the match, while Cole and senior Camryn Penn were on the field for all 90 minutes for the third consecutive match to open the season.
"I'm really proud of our backline, proud of Alyssa," Silva said, "… a clean sheet is huge in making sure that we continue to get ready to later in the season be able to win a tournament."
