EUGENE, Ore. — A pair of Cal Poly track and field athletes are headed to TrackTown USA to take part in the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships held at University of Oregon’s prestigious Hayward Field.
Rory Devaney and Chris Caudillo will both compete on Thursday during the opening day of the four-day meet that determines who will represent the U.S. at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 13-21. For the most part, the top three finishers in each event at the USA Championships — provided they have met the World Championships qualifying standard — will secure a spot on the U.S. team heading to Worlds.
Devaney will take center stage in the men’s hammer throw final at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while Caudillo is scheduled to run in the first round of the men’s 1,500-meter at 6:10 p.m. Live results for the meet are available HERE and a livestream is available on USATF.tv with the purchase of a subscription.
Hayward Field is a familiar place for Devaney, who had the best performance of his career at the facility just over a month ago to wrap up his junior season as a Mustang. At the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene in June, Devaney recorded a nearly 13-foot lifetime best in the men’s hammer throw (243 feet, 4 inches; 74.16 meters) to place fifth overall and earn First Team All-American honors. The current school record holder in the hammer throw, discus and weight throw became the highest NCAA finisher in a field event on the men’s side since 2007 and helped the Cal Poly men secure their fifth highest team finish at the NCAA Division I meet in program history.
Devaney’s mark from NCAAs is currently the 13th best recorded by an American this season and 16 men are entered in the event at USAs. Two years ago, Devaney took part in the 2023 USATF U20 Championships at Hayward Field following his freshman season as a Mustang, earning a pair of medals by placing second in the hammer throw and third in the discus.
Caudillo recently put himself in position to secure a ticket to USAs by running an over two-second lifetime best in the 1,500 at the Stumptown Twilight on July 19. His time of 3:35.65 is currently the second fastest in school history and is just .3 seconds off Davis Bove’s 2024 school record (3:35.35). He currently enters the meet with the 30th fastest time ran by an American this season and 35 runners are entered in the event. Caudillo is in the second of three heats and the top three finishers in each heat along with the next three fastest times will advance to the 1,500 final at 2:14 p.m. Saturday.
During his sophomore season on the track this spring, Caudillo qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries meet in the 1,500 for the second straight year and scored 14 team points for the Mustangs in their Big West Championship victory, capturing second in the 5,000 and third in the 1,500 for the second consecutive year to become a three-time All-Big West honoree in track.
Current Mustang Cadence Roy-Williams is also slated to be in action on Thursday at the 2025 Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa. Roy-Williams will compete in the qualifying round of the women’s long jump at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility. She enters the meet with a lifetime best of 19 feet, 11 inches (6.07 meters) in the long jump, which she recorded at this year’s Big West Championships to place second. The mark is currently No. 4 in school history. Live results for the meet are available HERE.
Four former Mustangs are also competing in the USATF Outdoor Championships. 2022 Cal Poly grad Jake Ritter, the first three-time Big West individual cross country champion in conference history, is set to run in the men’s 10,000 at 8:08 p.m. Thursday. 2021 grad Bobby Poynter, who competed at USC from 2022-23 after completing his undergrad and track career at Cal Poly, will run in the first round of the men's 800 at 3:07 p.m. on Thursday, while Sara Van Dyke — a member of the Mustang track & field and cross country teams from 2011-16 — is entered in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase which starts at 5:07 p.m. Thursday with the first round. 2019 Cal Poly grad Katie Izzo, who competed at Arkansas from 2019-21 after finishing her Mustang career, is entered in two events at USAs — the women’s 10,000 at 6:54 p.m. Thursday and the women’s 5,000 at 2:31 p.m. Sunday.
