SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Rory Devaney and Chris Caudillo wrapped up sensational seasons at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Thursday in Eugene, while Cadence Roy-Williams qualified for the final in the women's long jump at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa.
Devaney capped off one of the most impressive seasons by a men's hammer thrower in program history, placing 12th out of 16 competitors in the event with a mark of 237 feet, 9 inches (72.48 meters). The soon-to-be senior was 5 feet, 7 inches off his personal best that he recorded at Oregon's Hayward Field back in June to capture fifth at the NCAA Championships and earn First Team All-American honors.
The San Luis Obispo native is the current school record holder in the men's hammer throw, discus and weight throw and became the highest NCAA finisher in a field event on the men's side since 2007 with his performance at NCAAs in June.
After his running way into USAs nearly two weeks ago, Caudillo was looking strong during his semifinal heat of the men's 1,500-meter on Thursday night. The Clovis, Calif. native was sitting in fifth place in his heat with less than 200 meters to go when he suffered an injury that forced him to pull off the track. He eventually crossed the finish line in 34th place.
The injury was an unfortunate end to an incredible sophomore season for Caudillo, who earned podium finishes in both the men's 1,500 and 5,000 at the Big West Championships to score 14 team points for the Mustangs and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries for the second straight year. At the Stumptown Twilight on July 19, Caudillo ran an over two-second lifetime best of 3:35.65 in the 1,500 — second fastest in school history — to eventually secure his ticket to USAs.
In the qualifying round of the women's long jump at the Canadian nationals on Thursday, Roy-Williams secured a spot in the final. With the top five finishers in the qualifying round earning a spot in the final, Roy-Williams took fourth with a leap of 18 feet, 1.75 inches (5.53 meters) on her last attempt. She will compete in the women's long jump final at 9:30 a.m. PDT Saturday at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility alongside 11 other competitors. Live results for the final are available HERE. Roy-Williams currently owns the fourth best mark in school history in the long jump, placing second in the event at this year's Big West Championships.
Four former Mustangs also took part in events at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Thursday. 2019 Cal Poly grad Katie Izzo grabbed 10th in the women's 10,000 final (33:00.13), 2022 Cal Poly grad Jake Ritter secured 13th in the men's 10,000 final (29:40.94), 2016 Cal Poly grad Sara Van Dyke placed 20th in the first round of the women's 3,000 steeplechase (10:08.85) and 2021 Cal Poly grad Bobby Poynter finished 28th in the first round of the men's 800 (1:48.78). Izzo is also slated to run in the women's 5,000 final at 2:31 p.m. Sunday.
