SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team looks to continue its impressive regular season this weekend when the Mustangs host their final two home matches at the Ronca Tennis Center.
Cal Poly faces Cal State Fullerton first on Saturday before capping the weekend against UC Irvine on Sunday. Both matches will start at noon and following Sunday’s match against the Anteaters the Mustangs will honor their three graduating seniors — Eliza Bates, Peyton Dunkle and Romane Mosse.
Live scoring is available for both matches and links can be found on the Cal Poly women’s tennis schedule page. Make sure to follow Cal Poly women’s tennis on Instagram (@calpolywtennis) and Twitter/X (@CalPolyWTennis) for live updates throughout both matches.
Admission to all Cal Poly tennis matches is free, but this year the addition of the brand new state-of-the-art Comerford Pavilion is offering fans a unique viewing experience. This weekend, fans can purchase access to the Silva Ball Rally Alley which offers reserved seating on the second floor of the Pavilion, along with snacks and beverages. Single-match access is available to purchase for $40. Access to the Comerford Viewing Deck, located on the south side of the facility and above court 2, is free to fans at all times.
FIGHTING FOR A TITLE: With three matches remaining in the regular season, Cal Poly currently sits in second place in the Big West standings with a 5-1 conference record. No. 42-ranked and Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara (8-8) leads the Big West with a perfect 6-0 record. The Mustangs are two matches clear of Long Beach State (5-3) and Hawai’i (5-3) in the loss column and can lock up at least the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and a double bye to the Big West semifinals by winning both their matches this weekend.
RANKINGS UPDATE: Cal Poly checked in at No. 52 in the latest ITA team rankings marking the eighth straight week the Mustangs have been nationally ranked, their longest streak since 2011. Cal Poly is an impressive 16-3 on the season, tied for their third most victories in a season in Division I program history and their best record overall since going 17-7 during the 2022 season. The Mustangs have also won 13 of their last 14 matches.
SINGLES EXCELLENCE: After dropping the doubles point in their last match against UC San Diego on April 4 at the Ronca Tennis Center, Cal Poly rallied with five singles victories — including four in straight sets — to secure its seventh straight win with a 5-2 triumph over the Tritons. The Mustangs have leaned on their stellar singles play all season long, recording a 74.8 percent winning percentage (80-27) as a team in dual singles matches. Five Mustangs have double-digit singles victories this season, led by freshman Jessica MacCallum who is 15-3, 13-1 at the No. 5 spot and 5-1 in Big West play. She has won her last six singles matches and 15 out of her last 16 and her 15 wins on the year are currently tied for the 10th most singles victories in a season in Division I program history. Junior Alexandra Ozerets is 14-4 this season and 10-2 at No. 4, senior Peyton Dunkle is 13-2 and 12-2 at No. 2, sophomore Natalie Lynch is 13-4 and 10-3 at No. 6 and senior Romane Mosse is 12-6 and 7-3 at No. 3.
EYEING HISTORY: Dunkle, who has won her last seven singles matches, is just one singles win away from matching Carol Erickson’s Division I school record of 51 for career dual singles victories. She is also three doubles wins away from tying the school record for career dual doubles victories (54) this season. Dunkle has a 50-20 career singles record and a 51-26 career doubles record.
SCOUTING THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton enters Saturday’s match with the Mustangs with a 9-7 record and currently sits in seventh place in the conference standings (3-3 Big West) with three matches remaining. The Titans are fresh off a 5-2 win at UC Irvine last Sunday and also defeated UC San Diego 7-0 and UC Davis 4-1 earlier this season in conference play. Last year, Cal Poly avenged a 3-4 regular season defeat to the Titans in the conference championship match, taking down CSUF in a dramatic 4-3 victory to claim its second Big West title and first since 2003.
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS: Boasting a 10-8 record on the year, UC Irvine heads to No. 42 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday before battling the Mustangs on Sunday. The Anteaters currently sit in ninth place in the conference standings with a 1-4 Big West record. Cal Poly rolled to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Anteaters in Irvine last year and have won their last seven matchups with UCI.
UP NEXT: Following this weekend’s action, the Mustangs travel to rival UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m. next Saturday, April 19, to wrap up the regular season. The Big West regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament could be up for grabs in the match.
