SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Riding a five-match winning streak, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team heads to Southern California this week to take on a pair of Big West foes in UC Riverside and Long Beach State to finish off a four-match road swing.
The No. 38-ranked Mustangs battle the Highlanders first on Friday at the SRC Tennis Courts before facing Long Beach State at the Rhodes Tennis Center on Saturday. Both matches will start at 11 a.m.
Live scoring is available for Saturday’s match at the Beach HERE. Make sure to follow Cal Poly women’s tennis on Instagram (@calpolywtennis) and Twitter/X (@CalPolyWTennis) for updates throughout both matches.
THE CLIMB CONTINUES: Cal Poly rose to No. 38 in the latest ITA national team rankings, tied for the second highest ranking in the program’s history. The only time Cal Poly received a higher national ranking was when they checked in at No. 36 in the April 26, 2011 poll.
LAST TIME ON THE COURT: The Mustangs are coming off a pair of road victories this past week in Northern California to keep their winning streak intact. First, Cal Poly handed previously unbeaten and then-No. 49 Sacramento State its first loss of the season, winning four of the six singles matches — including a trio in three sets — to secure a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Hornets. Then the Mustangs capped the trip with a dominant performance at UC Davis in their Big West opener, rolling to a 6-1 win over the Aggies with five straight-set singles victories.
STREAKING STANGS: Freshman Jessica MacCallum has won her last eight singles matches and owns an impressive 8-2 record on the year. She is undefeated (7-0) playing at the No. 5 spot this season. Senior Peyton Dunkle is also on a roll, winning her last five singles matches at No. 2 to boast a 6-1 record on the year. Dunkle currently ranks No. 7 in Cal Poly history in career dual doubles victories (47) and is tied for seventh in career singles wins (43).
BATTLE TESTED: Cal Poly’s only two losses this season came against teams that are currently ranked, falling at No. 31 Arizona 4-0 on Jan. 20 and at home to No. 66 Fresno State 4-3 on Feb. 9. The Mustangs beat Washington State, currently ranked 47th in the country, 7-0 on Feb. 7 at the Ronca Tennis Center.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS: UC Riverside split a pair of matches in Arizona on Wednesday, falling to Grand Canyon 4-0 before bouncing back with a 4-0 win over Ottawa University. The Highlanders are 4-8 this season and 0-2 in Big West play. Cal Poly is 25-0 all-time against UCR.
SCOUTING THE BEACH: LBSU is currently on a six-match winning streak and will host Youngstown State at 2 p.m. Thursday before battling the Mustangs. The Beach is 7-2 overall and 1-1 in Big West play, falling at UC San Diego 4-3 on Feb. 8 and securing a 4-3 home victory over CSUN on Feb. 15. Last year, fifth-seeded Cal Poly earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 4 Long Beach State in the quarterfinals of the Big West tournament to kick off its run to its second Big West Championship in program history and first since 2003.
UP NEXT: After finishing off its four-match road swing, Cal Poly (8-2, 1-0 Big West) returns home to the Ronca Tennis Center on Monday at noon to face Loyola Marymount University to open a four-match homestand.
