SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team capped off a dominant weekend at the Ronca Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 7-0 victory over CSUN in its Big West home opener.
The shutout victory for the 56th-ranked Mustangs marked their second of the weekend after Cal Poly coasted to a 7-0 clean sweep over Santa Clara on Saturday. It was also their sixth shutout win of the season.
The win allowed the red-hot Mustangs to secure their third straight victory and improve to 12-3, their best start to a season since they posted a 14-3 record during the 2021 season. Cal Poly has now nine of its last 10 matches.
The Mustangs opened the match by capturing the doubles point. The Matadors won 6-3 at No. 3, but Cal Poly rallied with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 to gain a 1-0 lead. First, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock won 6-4 at No. 2 to improve to 8-3 together this season, then senior Peyton Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 to move to 8-2 as a pairing. Dunkle currently ranks sixth in Cal Poly history in career dual doubles victories with 50.
In singles, Cal Poly earned five decisive straight-set singles victories to silence the Matadors (6-7, 0-3 Big West). Dunkle picked up the first singles win at No. 2, improving to 9-2 this season and surpassing her older sister, Delanie Dunkle, for fifth on Cal Poly's career dual singles victories list with 46.
Mosse put Cal Poly on the verge of clinching the dual with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4, improving to 10-4 on the year. Then sophomore Natalie Lynch clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 to improve 10-3 this season and 8-2 at the No. 6 spot.
Freshman Jessica MacCallum continued her impressive season by capturing a 6-2, 6-4 win to improve to 10-1 at the fifth spot and 12-3 overall. She has won 12 of her last 13 singles matches.
Junior Alexandra Ozerets won in straight sets at No. 4 to improve to 11-3 on the year and 8-1 at the fourth spot.
