Women's Tennis Caps Perfect Homestand with Dramatic Win Over No. 69 Columbia

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team capped off an undefeated four-match homestand Friday with a dramatic 4-3 victory over No. 69 Columbia at the Ronca Tennis Center.
With the match knotted up at 3-3, it all came down to court No. 5 in singles and freshman Jessica MacCallum delivered in the clutch to propel the Mustangs to their fourth straight victory. In a thrilling match, MacCallum won the third set 6-4 to outlast her opponent and improve her singles record to 13-3 on the year. She has now won her last four singles matches and 13 out of her last 14.
The 65th-ranked Mustangs opened the day by capturing a hard-fought doubles point against the Lions (8-6). At No. 2, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock captured a 6-3 victory to secure their fourth straight win and improve to 9-3 on the year. Cal Poly fell at No. 1, before sophomore Natalie Lynch and MacCallum stepped up and clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3, improving to 3-1 together this season.
In singles, Columbia picked up a win in straight sets at No. 6 to level the match at 1-1 before senior Peyton Dunkle put the Mustangs back in front with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 to improve to 10-2 on the season. The win allowed her to move into a tie with Brittany Blalock for fourth on Cal Poly's career dual singles victories list with 47.
The Lions tied the match up at 2-2 with a win at No. 4 before Mosse put the Mustangs on the brink of clinching the dual with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 to move to 11-4 on the year.
Buntrock dropped a thrilling three-setter at No. 1 before MacCallum clinched the dual for the Mustangs.
Friday's win was Cal Poly's fourth straight and allowed them to improve to 13-3, their best start to a season since they posted a 14-3 record during the 2021 season.
Cal Poly heads to the island of O'ahu this coming week for a neutral-site match against Hawai'i Pacific on Tuesday, March 25, and a showdown at Big West foe Hawai'i on Wednesday, March 26. Both matches will start at 2 p.m. PDT.
