HONOLULU, O'ahu — The Cal Poly women's tennis team captured its fifth straight victory Tuesday, securing five straight-set singles wins in a 6-1 triumph over Hawai'i Pacific University at Hawai'i's UH Tennis Complex.
The win allowed the 51st-ranked Mustangs to improve to an impressive 14-3, matching their best start since they posted a 14-3 record during the 2021 season.
Cal Poly started the dual by earning the doubles point over Division II Hawai'i Pacific (4-10). At No. 2, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock grabbed a 6-1 win to secure their fifth straight victory and improve to 10-3 together this season. Then at No. 3, sophomore Natalie Lynch and freshman Jessica MacCallum clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs for the second consecutive dual with a 6-4 victory to move to 4-1 on the year.
In singles, Cal Poly quickly took a 3-0 lead thanks to some decisive victories at No. 1 and No. 4. First, Lynch nearly double-bageled her opponent with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 to improve to 11-4 this year. Then senior Peyton Dunkle moved up to the No. 1 spot and picked up her fifth straight win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, moving her record to 11-2. The win allowed her to move into a tie with Melissa LaMette for third on Cal Poly's career dual singles victories list with 48.
The Sharks won at No. 2, but junior Alexandra Ozerets provided the dual-clinching point for the Mustangs for the fifth time this season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 to improve to 12-4. With the win, Ozerets moved into a tie for 10th on Cal Poly's career dual singles victories list with 41.
Junior Sarah MacCallum and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather helped the Mustangs finish off an emphatic 6-1 victory over Hawai'i Pacific with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. Sarah MacCallum improved to 6-1 while the singles victory for Leather was the first of her Mustang career in dual play after medically redshirting last year due to injury.
Cal Poly caps off its trip to Hawai'i at 2 p.m. PDT Wednesday with a showdown against the 70th-ranked Rainbow Wahine (7-5).
