SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team battled until the bitter end but fell short to Fresno State 4-3 on Sunday night in an emotional dual that lasted over four hours at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (3-2) and Bulldogs (4-3) made up for the lack of drama in the Super Bowl by putting on absolute show for the fans in attendance at Sunday's match.
With the dual knotted up at 3-3, it all came down to court No. 3 in singles where junior Alexandra Ozerets rallied to force a third set against Fresno State's Sofia Pizzoni. Ozerets fell behind 5-3 in the third set, but won two straight games and eventually forced a winner-take-all set tiebreaker. The two players traded points back and forth, but ultimately Pizzoni was able to win the tiebreak 7-5 to secure the dual victory for the Bulldogs (4-2).
The dual started with a thrilling fight for the doubles point. Senior Peyton Dunkle and freshman Jessica MacCallum absolutely coasted to a commanding 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot for their first win together. At No. 3, junior Sarah MacCallum and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather lost a tight match 6-4, meaning it all came down to court No. 1.
Senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock forced a tiebreaker at No. 1, earning a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak before eventually falling 7-6 (7-5).
Fresno State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a win at the No. 2 singles spot, but the Mustangs weren't going down without one heck of a fight. Jessica MacCallum got Cal Poly on the board with a victory at No. 5, dismantling her opponent 6-0, 7-5 to secure her third straight singles win.
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 advantage with a win at No. 1, but Mosse responded with a victory in straight sets at No. 4 (7-5, 6-2) to capture her third straight singles win.
With Cal Poly trailing 3-2, the Mustangs needed to win the final two matches at No. 3 and No. 6 to emerge victorious in the dual.
Sophomore Natalie Lynch did her part to keep the hopes of a Mustang comeback alive, grabbing a dramatic three-set victory at No. 6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The win was Lynch's third consecutive and allowed her to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Ozerets' hard-fought defeat at No. 3 was her first of the season and she now sits at 3-1.
This is the second straight year the Mustangs have lost to the Bulldogs by just one match point, falling to them 4-3 in Fresno last season.
Cal Poly will look to rebound from the defeat when they host San Jose State at 11 a.m. next Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Ronca Tennis Center.
