The Mustangs (3-2) are coming off a dominant 7-0 victory over Washington State on Feb. 7 followed by dropping a thrilling 4-3 nail-biter to Fresno State on Super Bowl Sunday.
Cal Poly shut out the Cougars with an impressive performance, taking the doubles point to start the match with wins by the No. 1 duo of Kennedy Buntrock and Romane Mosse, followed by a clinching victory by the No. 3 tandem of Amy Leather and Sarah MacCallum. In singles, Peyton Dunkle (No. 2), Mosse (No. 4), Jessica MacCallum (No. 5) and Natalie Lynch (No. 6) all won in straight sets to help the Mustangs cruise to a dual victory.
Last Sunday’s dual against Fresno State was much more dramatic. With the dual knotted up at 3-3, it all came down to court No. 3 in singles where junior Alexandra Ozerets rallied to force a third set against Fresno State's Sofia Pizzoni. Ozerets fell behind 5-3 in the third set, but won two straight games and eventually forced a winner-take-all set tiebreaker. The two players traded points back and forth, but ultimately Pizzoni was able to win the tiebreak 7-5 to secure the dual victory for the Bulldogs.
In that dual with the Bulldogs, Mosse (No. 4), Jessica MacCallum (No. 5) and Natalie Lynch (No. 6) all picked up their third straight singles victory. It marked the second straight year Cal Poly lost to the Bulldogs by just one match point, falling to them 4-3 in Fresno last season.
This Sunday, the Mustangs will face a San Jose State squad that has yet to lose this season (4-0). The Spartans own victories over UC Riverside, Academy of Art, UC Davis and Pacific. Last season, Cal Poly fell at San Jose State 4-3.
This spring, the Mustangs are looking to build off one of their most successful seasons in program history under third-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams. Last year, the Mustangs charged through the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed to capture their second Big West Championship in program history. The triumph allowed Cal Poly to punch its ticket to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history and first time since 2011.
Cal Poly rounds out its homestand at the Ronca Tennis Center next week against Gonzaga on Friday, Feb. 21, at noon and Grand Canyon (3-3) on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.
