SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team captured its fourth straight victory Friday, handing previously unbeaten and No. 49-ranked Sacramento State its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex.
The No. 50 Mustangs dropped the doubles point, but won four of the six singles matches — including a trio in three sets — to secure a come-from-behind victory over the Hornets (7-1).
With the dual knotted at 3-3, it all came down to the No. 4 singles spot to decide a winner. Junior Alexandra Ozerets came through in the clutch in a tiebreaker in the third set to propel Cal Poly to victory, winning 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Despite dropping the doubles point to start the dual, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock were able to secure a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 1 to earn their third straight victory together and improve to 4-2 on the season.
In singles play, freshman Jessica MacCallum was able to quickly level the dual at 1-1 with yet another commanding win. MacCallum grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to secure her impressive seventh consecutive win and move to 7-2 on the year. The Laguna Beach native has won all seven of her singles matches this season in straight sets.
The five remaining singles matches all went to a third set. At No. 1, Buntrock gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead with a comeback victory, winning 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to move to 4-2 on the season.
Senior Peyton Dunkle gave Cal Poly a 3-1 lead and put the team on the brink of clinching the dual with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 2 — her fourth straight. The victory allowed her to improve to 5-1 on the year and was the 42nd singles victory of her career, moving her to No. 9 in Cal Poly history.
Ozerets' clincher at No. 4 was the third time she's earned the clinching point for the Mustangs this season.
Mosse (No. 3) and sophomore Natalie Lynch (No. 6) both fell short in hard-fought three-set singles matches.
Cal Poly (7-2) will look to keep things rolling when they open Big West play at 11 a.m. Saturday at UC Davis.
