No. 56 Women's Tennis Grabs Third Straight Win to Finish Off Homestand
2/23/2025 10:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team picked up its third straight victory Sunday at the Ronca Tennis Center, downing Grand Canyon 5-2 to finish with a 5-1 record during its six-match homestand.
The win allowed the 56th-ranked Mustangs to improve to 6-2 — their best start to a season since beginning the 2021 season with a 10-0 record.
For the third straight dual and the fourth time in the last five matches, Cal Poly opened the day by securing the doubles point. First, senior Peyton Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather picked up a 7-5 victory at No. 2 to remain undefeated as a tandem this season (3-0). Then just seconds later, the No. 1 duo of senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock sealed the doubles point with a 7-5 win of their own to improve to 3-2 on the season.
In singles, Cal Poly was able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead over the Antelopes (5-5) thanks to an impressive victory at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Jessica MacCallum rolled to a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win to up her winning streak to six and improve to 6-2 on the year.
GCU made it 2-1 with a win in straight sets at No. 3, but sophomore Natalie Lynch responded at No. 6 to put the Mustangs on the verge of clinching the dual. Lynch secured her fifth straight singles victory, downing her opponent in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to move to 5-1 on the season.
With the Mustangs leading 3-1, all Cal Poly needed was one more singles victory to clinch the dual, but the Antelopes made them fight tooth-and-nail for it. The final three remaining singles matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 all went to a third set.
After dropping the first set in her match at No. 2 4-1, Dunkle rallied and propelled the Mustangs to victory. She won the second set 6-2 and the third 6-4 to clinch the dual and capture her third straight victory, moving to 4-1 on the year.
Mosse gave Cal Poly a 5-1 lead with a three-set victory at No. 4. It was her fifth straight victory and allowed her to improve to 5-2 on the year and 3-0 while playing at the No. 4 spot.
Buntrock battled extremely hard at the No. 1 spot. After losing the first set in her match 6-1, the Henderson, Nevada native responded by winning a dramatic second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). Ultimately though, Buntrock would fall short, losing the third set 6-2.
Cal Poly will look to continue its winning streak when they head to Northern California this coming week for a pair of matches. The Mustangs take on Sacramento State at noon Friday before heading to UC Davis on Saturday at 11 a.m. to open Big West play.
