
Cal Poly Improves to Fourth at Mesquite Desert Classic

MESQUITE, Nev. – Four of the Cal Poly men’s golf program’s five players at Eastern Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic improved their standing on the leaderboard Monday as the Mustangs – with a 13-under par 275 during the second round – jumped from seventh to fourth.
At the par-72, 7,010-yard Casablanca Course, senior Baron Szeto – the 87th ranked player in Division I – recorded seven birdies against a solitary bogey for a six-under 66. Starting the day in 13th position, Szeto finished in sixth and sits just five strokes behind leader Anders Larson of Eastern Kentucky entering Tuesday’s final round.
Cal Poly’s biggest mover Tuesday was sophomore Leo Metzger (above), who climbed 24 positions to 12th place with a four-under 68 that included five birdies.
Eagling the 550-yard, par-five sixth hole and collecting three further birdies, freshman Nolan Kuszyk moved 18 spots and into 18th position.
Also with an eagle Monday on the 531-yard, par-five 11th, sophomore Reese Sato produced an even-par 72 to sit in 24th spot.
Junior Sean Lehman climbed 13 positions into 30th with four birdies and a two-under 70.
As a program, Cal Poly’s 13-under 275 was the second lowest score among the 12 competing programs during Monday’s second round. The Mustangs are 10 shot behind leader Eastern Kentucky, five back of second place Utah Valley and just one shy of third place Utah Tech.
Final-round action at the Mesquite Desert Classic gets underway Tuesday morning.
