MESQUITE, Nev. – Senior Baron Szeto and freshman Nolan Kuszyk (above) both blistered the par-72, 7,010-yard Casablanca Course with five-under 67s Tuesday afternoon to help lead the Cal Poly men’s golf program to a third-place finish at Eastern Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic as the Mustangs matched the sixth-lowest tournament score in program history.
Szeto, Cal Poly’s leading scorer and the 87th ranked player in Division I, produced seven birdies against two bogeys Tuesday, improving four spots to third place overall with a three-round, 10-under 206.
Kuszyk, meanwhile, chalked up five birdies Tuesday to climb 13 spots and finish fifth with a six-under 210.
Mustang sophomore Leo Metzger carded a one-over 73 Tuesday and finished 18th with a three-round, one-under 215.
Fellow sophomore Reese Sato was two-over Tuesday and closed tournament action in 24th with a two-over 218.
Cal Poly junior Sean Lehman was 54th with a three-round, 10-over 226.
As a program, Cal Poly led all 12 teams Tuesday with a seven-under 281. Climbing one spot on the leaderboard to third, Cal Poly finished the Mesquite Desert Classic with a 17-under 847 – just three strokes behind champion Utah Valley.
After a six-day break, Cal Poly resumes play at Fresno State’s Feb. 24-25 Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Country Club.
