FRESNO – Senior Baron Szeto seeks his second individual title of the season during Tuesday’s final round at the Fresno State-hosted Nick Watney Invitational as the nation’s 82nd-ranked player sits one shot off the lead and in second place after firing a three-under 68 during Monday morning’s opening round and a five-under 66 in the afternoon second round.
Enjoying four players in the top 30 on the leaderboard, Cal Poly – with a collective nine-under 559 during the opening 36 holes Monday at the 6,938-yard, par-71 Sunnyside Country Club – sits in fifth, just six shots behind leader Fresno State.
Szeto, who collected 14 birdies against six bogeys Monday, resides just one shot behind overall leader Carlos Astiazaran of Pacific – the 115th-ranked player in Division I.
Cal Poly senior Jackson Parrish is 18th overall, climbing 11 positions in the afternoon with a two-under 69 during the second round following a morning 71.
Sophomore Leo Metzger, who eagled the par four, 415-yard opening hole, is 25th with a two-round, even-par 142. Aside from the eagle, Metzger’s opening round included six birdies for a four-under 67.
Freshman Nolan Kuszyk is 29th, jumping 11 spots in the afternoon with an even-par 71. Senior Parker Mapes also improved three shots during the afternoon round and enters Tuesday in 72nd.
Competing as independents, sophomore Reese Sato climbed to 49th with a one-over 72 during a second round that included three birdies while junior Sean Lehman is 70th overall.
The final round of the Nick Watney Invitational gets underway Tuesday morning.
