FRESNO – Led by senior Baron Szeto’s seventh-place showing, four Mustangs finished in the top 30 at Fresno State’s Nicky Watney Invitational as the Mustangs improved one spot on the leaderboard to fourth during Tuesday’s third and final round.
At the 6,938-yard, par-71 Sunnyside Country Club, Szeto – the 82nd-ranked player in Division I – collected three birdies during the final round and finished with a one-over 72. His three-round total of seven-under 206 was three shots behind champion Carlos Astiazaran of Pacific.
Fellow senior Jackson Parrish finished 24th with a three-round, one-over 214 while freshman Nolan Kuszyk – climbing two spots on the leaderboard to 27th – carded a two-over 215.
One shot behind in 29th was sophomore Leo Metzger, finishing with a three-over 216. Senior Parker Mapes was Cal Poly’s biggest climber Tuesday, producing four birdies for a one-under 70, a three-round total of 223 and increasing 18 spots to 53rd.
Competing as independents, sophomore Reese Sato shared 53rd spot alongside Mapes while junior Sean Lehman was 61st.
As a program, Cal Poly carded a four-over 290 during Tuesday’s final round, jumping one spot into fourth place overall with a three-round, five-under 847.
Cal Poly continues action at the March 10-11 R.E.L. Invitational, hosted by San Diego at the San Diego Country Club.
