SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The dangerous duo up top that led the Cal Poly women’s soccer team to its first Big West Championship in 21 years received some much deserved recognition on Tuesday. Senior forward Jessie Halladay and junior forward Annika Smith both earned All-West Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches.
Halladay was named to the 11-player All-West Region First Team while Smith was selected to the Third Team. This is the first time Halladay and Smith have garnered All-West Region praise and the first time since 2022 that the Mustangs have had multiple honorees during a season.
Halladay and Smith were two of six players from the Big West that received All-West Region status.
The praise comes as no surprise from arguably the best two forwards in the conference, who combined for 17 goals, eight assists, 42 points and 117 shots this season.
Halladay was a force to be reckoned with in her final season this fall and is the first Mustang to earn All-West Region First Team honors since Camille Lafaix in 2022. After being named to the All-Big West Second Team following the regular season, the Los Gatos, Calif. native went on a tear this postseason, scoring all three of Cal Poly’s goals in the postseason. She netted the game-winner for the Mustangs in 1-0 victories in both the Big West Semifinals and Big West Championship, and buried a header just 49 seconds into their NCAA First Round defeat at No. 1 Stanford, the sixth quickest goal to open a match in program history.
The Big West Championship MVP finished the season as the conference leader in goals (10), shots (78), shots on goal (35) and total points (24). Her 10 goals this season are the most by a Mustang since 2021 and are tied for the 12th most in a single season in program history. The 2024 All-Big West Honorable Mention selection ends her Cal Poly career with 49 career points, tied with Jill Nelsen (1997-99) for the 11th most in program history. Her 24 points this season are also tied for the 13th most in a single season in program history. Across 55 career appearances and 31 starts as a Mustang, Halladay recorded 19 goals, 11 assists and 149 shots.
Smith was just as impressive this season. The Scottdale, Ariz. native became the second Mustang in program history to be crowned the Big West Offensive Player of the Year, tallying seven goals — tied for the second most in the conference — and 18 points, the fourth most in the Big West. Smith started in all 22 matches for the Mustangs this season, racking up 1,558 minutes on the pitch, 39 shots and three game-winners.
A three-time All-Big West honoree, Smith has recorded 16 goals and seven assists across her Cal Poly career over 61 appearances and 59 starts. She has started in 31 consecutive matches dating back to last season.
