WAIPAHU, O’ahu. — The Mustangs fought until the final whistle, but the Cal Poly women’s soccer team dropped a tight 1-0 decision at Hawai’i on Thursday night at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium.
Despite the result, Cal Poly (4-2-8, 2-2-1 Big West) remains in fifth place in the Big West standings with five matches remaining in the season.
“I think this conference is about margins,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, “and we got to keep fighting to be on the winning side of those margins and I thought Hawai’i was better than us today at that.”
The Rainbow Wahine (3-5-7, 1-1-3 Big West) scored the match’s lone goal in the 40th minute and outshot the Mustangs 12-3 in the first half.
Trailing 1-0, Cal Poly stepped up its play in the final 45 minutes and generated a number of scoring chances.
Sophomore midfielder Kiki Vostermans fired a shot over the goal in the 59th minute and in the 71st minute, senior defender Brennan Cole created some space just outside the 18-yard box and blasted a shot toward the top center of the goal that the Hawai’i goalkeeper just got a piece of to tip over the net.
Cal Poly’s hunt for a goal and equalizer continued in the closing moments when a corner kick played into the box in the 87th minute led to a frantic scramble in front. Freshman midfielder Farra Franklin saw a header get turned away by a Hawai’i defender standing right on the goal line, and then a diving shot by sophomore defender Ava Mirelez went off the outside of the right post following several headers, pokes and shoves in front of the goal.
The Mustangs’ late push wasn’t enough as they suffered just their second loss of the season. Redshirt freshman Shannon Porubski made three saves in net in her ninth consecutive start.
Cal Poly outshot the Rainbow Wahine 8-4 in the second half and senior forward Jessie Halladay and redshirt sophomore defender Siena Urzua never stepped off the pitch in the match.
“I think the biggest learning for us out of this trip is we need to put together two 45-minute halves and not just one,” Silva said. “We didn’t show up to play hard enough in that first half, so we’ve really got to look at film and get better at that.”
Looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, Cal Poly hosts Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. Sunday in a pivotal Big West battle. You can purchase tickets to the match HERE.
