SAN LUIS OBISPO – UC Santa Barbara defender Haruki Utsumi marked the difference in Saturday’s Blue-Green rivalry matchup with a 14th-minute strike as the Cal Poly men’s soccer team – in front of 9,543 fans, the second highest attendance figure in NCAA Division I this year – fell to the Gauchos, 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up two saves and junior defender Parker Owens cleared a 21st-minute UC Santa Barbara attempt off the goal line for Cal Poly (5-5-5, 2-2-2), which stayed on eight points in the Big West standings, but slipped to fifth place.
With three regular season matches remaining and the top six programs in the 10-team Big West table qualifying for the conference championship, Cal Poly continues action Wednesday, Oct. 22 at UC Riverside. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
McCune was called upon to make a first-minute save before the Gauchos produced the eventual game-winning goal in the 14th, midfielders Eddie Villeda and Jack Middleton combining on a corner kick to set up Utsumi, who scored his first goal of the fall.
After producing one first-half attempt on target, the Mustangs outshot UC Santa Barbara during the second half, 9-2, with midfielder Jackson Miller striking the crossbar in the 55th and forward Sean McTague lashing a shot wide of the left post on 73 minutes.
The Mustangs had one final attempt to square the game in the 87th, but an attempt from junior defender Joaquin Torres from 12 yards was parried away by Gauchos goalkeeper Luke Skinner.
A big thank you to all of our supporters for making Saturday's Blue-Green rivalry matchup with UC Santa Barbara the second highest attended college soccer match in the nation this year!#RideHigh pic.twitter.com/q3fheL0EMx
