SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite the start of the season being delayed by nearly two hours due to rain, Cal Poly men's tennis kicked off the 2025 season strong with a 5-0 win at home over Sacramento State Saturday.
Playing its first match at the newly renovated Ronca Tennis Center, the Mustangs (1-0) got things going quickly as in doubles, as sophomore Sean Ferguson and junior Aaron Eliscu paired together at the No. 3 spot and won their match 6-1. The doubles point was later clinched by the No. 1 duo of sophomores Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev after they won their match 6-4.
Playing under the lights in singles, a first in program history at Ronca Tennis Center, Mustang freshman Jack McGary started off his first dual match with a straight sets victory at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-1.
A short time later it was another freshman getting his first win of his collegiate career as John Cross won his match in straight sets at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-2 to put Cal Poly ahead 3-0.
It was then senior Bastiaan Weststrate at the No. 2 spot who clinched the victory for Cal Poly after he won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Kamyshev gave Cal Poly its fifth point of the match after he won his match at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 7-5.
When the match was later called due to more rain, both remaining matches had Cal Poly either tied or leading as sophomore Raz Haviv led 5-3 in the third and sophomore Liam Toroman was tied 5-5 in the second.
Cal Poly will travel to Denver next week for two matches there. They will face the University of Denver Jan. 31 before a neutral site match against NAU Feb. 1.
