Cal Poly Earns Emphatic 6-1 Victory Over Bobcats in Home Opener
1/24/2025 7:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team opened its 2025 home schedule with an emphatic victory over Montana State on Friday, sweeping singles en route to a 6-1 win over the Bobcats at the Ronca Tennis Center.
Playing a dual in front of the brand new state-of-the-art Comerford Pavilion for the first time, the Mustangs put on a dominant showing in singles to get things started on a high note at home.
Cal Poly (2-1) opened the match by dropping the doubles point, but junior Sarah MacCallum and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather were able to grab a commanding 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot, improving to 2-1 together on the season.
Trailing 1-0, the Mustangs took the court for singles play looking to dominant the Bobcats (1-2) — and they did just that, winning five of the six singles matches in commanding fashion.
Sarah MacCallum picked up the first singles win for Cal Poly, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot to move to 2-1 on the year. Her younger sister, freshman Jessica MacCallum, grabbed her first career dual singles victory, winning 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Then sophomore Natalie Lynch dismantled her opponent at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-2, to secure her first career dual singles victory.
With the Mustangs leading 3-1, junior Alexandra Ozerets sealed the dual victory for the team with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 spot to improve to 2-0 on the season. Ozerets has earned the match clinching point for the Mustangs in both their victories this season.
Junior Kennedy Buntrock earned the final of five straight-set singles victories for the Mustangs on the day, winning 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to move to 2-0 on the year.
The last match to finish was a battle on court No. 2 that saw senior Romane Mosse fight until the bitter end to pick up a win. After dropping the first set 7-5, Mosse rallied and won the second set 6-4 to force a decisive third-set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Mosse left no doubt, winning 10-5 to complete the comeback victory and the singles sweep for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly remains at home to host Santa Clara at noon Sunday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
