SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis program officially opens its 2025 spring home schedule this Friday and Sunday when the Mustangs host a pair of duals to kick-off a seven-match homestand at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (1-1) take on Montana State first in their home opener at noon Friday before capping the weekend at noon Sunday against Santa Clara. Live scoring is available for both matches and links can be found on the Cal Poly women’s tennis schedule page. Currently, rain is expected in the San Luis Obispo area on Sunday, so make sure to follow Cal Poly women’s tennis on Instagram (@calpolywtennis) and Twitter/X (@CalPolyWTennis) for any updates regarding a change in match time.
Cal Poly is fresh off opening its dual season this past Sunday and Monday in Tucson against Northern Arizona and University of Arizona. The Mustangs started their season-opening trip on a high note, taking down a talented NAU team 4-3 in a neutral-site match. Junior Alexandra Ozerets secured the match-clinching point for the Mustangs in the dual against the Lumberjacks (0-2), winning her singles match at the No. 4 spot in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1). In the dual at Arizona on Monday, the Mustangs battled extremely hard and fought tooth and nail in both singles and doubles, but ultimately fell short to the Wildcats 4-0.
In both duals, junior Kennedy Buntrock played at the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles. In singles, Buntrock picked up a win in straight sets against NAU and in the battle with the Wildcats was leading in the third set of her match against No. 74-ranked Midori Castillo-Meza when Arizona clinched the dual. The Henderson, Nevada native didn’t get to finish out either one of her doubles matches during the Mustangs’ season-opening weekend. In the dual with Arizona, Buntrock and senior Romane Mosse were tied with the 52nd-ranked doubles pairing in the country 5-5 when the Wildcats clinched the doubles point, leading 5-3 at one point.
Friday’s showdown with the Bobcats (1-1) will mark the third all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since Feb. 14, 1999. The Mustangs were scheduled to host Montana State last season, but weather forced the match to be canceled. The Bobcats opened their dual season last weekend in Salt Lake City, defeating Utah Tech 7-0 before falling to Utah 0-4. Last year, Montana State posted a 13-7 overall record and lost to Weber State 4-0 in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Cal Poly has emerged victorious in its last five matchups against Santa Clara, including a 5-2 win over the Broncos last year in San Luis Obispo. Santa Clara opened its season last weekend with a pair of home victories, defeating UC Davis 5-2 and Academy of Art 7-0. The Broncos went 6-12 last season.
This spring, the Mustangs are hoping to build off one of their most successful seasons in program history under third-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams. Last year, the Mustangs charged through the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed to capture their second Big West Championship in program history and first since 2003. The triumph allowed Cal Poly to punch its ticket to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history and first time since 2011.
The two home duals this weekend will be the Mustangs’ first playing in front of the brand new, state-of-the-art Comerford Pavilion, which is now the new home for the Cal Poly men’s and women’s tennis programs.
Montana State and Santa Clara are also scheduled to play each other in a neutral-site match at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
Following the action this weekend, Cal Poly remains at home to host Washington State on Friday, Feb. 7, and Fresno State on Sunday, Feb. 9.
