Mustangs Fall Short in Hard-Fought Match at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team fought extremely hard and took Arizona to the brink in both singles and doubles, but ultimately fell short to the Wildcats 4-0 on Monday at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to wrap up its season-opening road trip in Tucson.
In doubles play, the Mustangs held their own against an Arizona side that finished last year ranked No. 39 in the country and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. After Cal Poly came up short at the No. 2 spot 6-3, the Mustangs fought tooth and nail to earn victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Sophomore Natalie Lynch and freshman Jessica MacCallum were leading 5-4 at No. 3 before the Wildcats rallied for a 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point. When the doubles point was clinched, senior Romane Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock were tied with the 52nd-ranked doubles pairing in the country 5-5 and were beating them 5-3 at one point.
In singles, four matches went to a third set while the Wildcats (3-0) won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 4 to take a 3-0 lead in the dual. Junior Alexandra Ozerets at No. 3 and Lynch at No. 5 captured first-set victories in their matches, while Buntrock at No. 1 and junior Sarah MacCallum at No. 6 won the second set in their matches to stay alive.
The Mustangs battled on every court and made the Wildcats earn every point, but a three-set win by Arizona at No. 6 clinched the 4-0 dual victory.
Buntrock was leading Arizona's Midori Castillo-Meza, the 74th-ranked singles player in the country, 2-1 in the third set when the match was clinched. Lynch was also leading 3-2 in the third set of her match.
The Mustangs return to San Luis Obispo this week to open a seven-match homestand. Cal Poly hosts Montana State on Friday and Santa Clara on Sunday in its first two home matches at the Ronca Tennis Center. Both matches will start at noon.
