Cal Poly Downs NAU to Open Dual Season
1/19/2025 2:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
TUCSON, Ariz. — Junior Alexandra Ozerets earned the match-clinching point for the Mustangs as the Cal Poly women's tennis team opened its dual season with a 4-3 victory over Northern Arizona in a neutral-site match held at University of Arizona's LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Sunday.
Sophomore Natalie Lynch and freshman Jessica MacCallum both made their first career dual appearance and helped the Mustangs (1-0) emerge victorious against a tough NAU team, that was picked to finish second in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll.
The defending Big West champions opened the dual by securing the doubles point. Lynch and Jessica MacCallum teamed up for a decisive 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot and then junior Sarah MacCallum and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather grabbed a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs. For Leather, it was her first dual appearance as a Mustang after redshirting last season due to injury. At the No. 1 spot, senior Romane and junior Kennedy Buntrock were trailing 5-4 when the doubles point was secured.
In singles, NAU knotted the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 2, but the Mustangs responded with three straight victories to close it out. First, Buntrock dismantled her opponent 7-6, 6-1 in her first career match playing at the No. 1 spot. Then Sarah MacCallum picked up a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot to put Cal Poly one singles win away from clinching it.
With a victory in sight, Ozerets gritted out an extremely hard-fought win in straight sets at No. 4, defeating NAU's Elen Jantacova 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1) to wrap up the season-opening dual for the Mustangs. Ozerets served an ace on the match-clinching point.
Jessica MacCallum (No. 3) and Lynch (No. 5) both won a set in their matches before ultimately coming up just short in a third set.
Cal Poly (1-0) wraps up its trip to Tucson at 9 a.m. PST Monday when the team battles Arizona (2-0) at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. You can watch the match on PlaySight.
