SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis team officially kicks off the dual portion of its season when the Mustangs travel to Tucson to take on Northern Arizona on Sunday and Arizona on Monday.
The Mustangs battle NAU first at 11 a.m. PST Sunday in a neutral-site match and then cap off their trip to the desert at 9 a.m. PST Monday against the Wildcats at University of Arizona’s LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
A livestream via PlaySight and live scoring will be available for the Mustangs’ match at Arizona on Monday.
Cal Poly’s showdown with Northern Arizona on Sunday will mark the seventh meeting all-time between the two teams and the first since Jan. 27, 2007.
Monday’s matchup at Arizona will be the Mustangs’ first with the Wildcats since falling to them 6-1 in Tucson on Jan. 22, 2023. Arizona opened its spring season Friday with a pair of home victories, defeating Loyola Marymount 5-0 and UC San Diego 7-0. Last year, the Wildcats earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, falling to Oklahoma 4-0 in the First Round.
This spring, the Mustangs are hoping to build off one of their most successful seasons in program history under third-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams. Last year, the Mustangs charged through the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed to capture their second Big West Championship in program history and first since 2003. The triumph allowed Cal Poly to punch its ticket to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history and first time since 2011.
Cal Poly returns eight of its 10 players from last year’s team that finished the season ranked No. 68 in the country and fell to No. 11 seed USC 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. A pair of All-Big West honorees from 2024 are back in senior Peyton Dunkle (First Team singles & doubles) and senior Romane Mosse (Second Team singles). Senior Eliza Bates, juniors Kennedy Buntrock, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets, redshirt sophomore Amy Leather and sophomore Natalie Lynch make up the rest of Cal Poly’s returners. Freshmen Jessica MacCallum and Anushree Shekhera are the Mustangs’ two newcomers this season.
Following the two matches in Tucson, Cal Poly returns to the Ronca Tennis Center to open a seven-match homestand. The Mustangs host Montana State at noon on Friday, Jan. 24, and Santa Clara on Sunday, Jan. 26, at noon.
