Mustangs Fall to UC Santa Barbara on Buzzer-Beating Three-Pointer
1/11/2025 8:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate guard Owen Koonce (above) scored a game high 23 points – including 22 during the second half – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,032 fans inside Mott Athletics Center, fell to UC Santa Barbara 75-72 after Gauchos guard Stephan Swenson sank his sixth three-pointer of Saturday evening with one-tenth of a second remaining.
Freshman guard Peter Bandelj added a career best 18 points and game high nine rebounds for Cal Poly (6-12, 0-6), which trailed UC Santa Barbara (11-5, 3-2), 72-67, with 30 seconds to play before Bandelj knocked down a three-pointer.
Cal Poly then forced a UC Santa Barbara turnover on the ensuing inbounds with graduate guard Mac Riniker tying up Swenson as the Mustangs regained possession on the jump ball. Koonce followed with a layup for the matchup's only tied scoreline of the night at 72-72 with 16 seconds to play.
The Gauchos, however, had the final possession and Swenson converted the opportunity from the left wing, draining UC Santa Barbara's 15th three-pointer of the night and 10th of the second half.
Senior guard Isaac Jessup matched a career best with seven rebounds for Cal Poly, which shot 55.6 (15-for-27) percent from the floor during the second half to nearly overturn a nine-point halftime deficit. The Mustangs outscored UC Santa Barbara in the paint (34-22), on fast breaks (19-2) and in bench points (31-6).

Off to a 5-for-7 shooting start Saturday, UC Santa Barbara led 12-3 after three minutes while holding the Mustangs to a 0-for-7 opening from the three-point line. Jessup though sank Cal Poly's first three midway through the opening half and graduate forward Ethan Menzies followed with a layup to cut the deficit to 19-14, but UC Santa Barbara countered with an 10-0 run to go up 29-14 six minutes before the break.
Still facing a 14-point disadvantage with a minute-and-a-half to go, the Mustangs received a layup from Bandelj before the freshman drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Cal Poly's halftime gap to 34-25.
Cal Poly, however, connected on three of its first four attempts of the second half with three-pointers from Koonce and graduate guard Mac Riniker allowing Cal Poly to close to a 36-33 deficit.
Despite trailing by as much as 14 in the second half, Cal Poly cut its deficit to two points three times down the stretch before Koonce's late layup tied the scoreline.
