Mustangs on Downside on Thursday Home Decision to UC Davis
1/16/2025 9:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate guard Mac Riniker finished with a team high 18 points Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program fell inside Mott Athletics Center to UC Davis, 65-54.
Senior guard Isaac Jessup added 12 points for Cal Poly (6-13, 0-7), which sank six first-half three-pointers and five more during the opening nine minutes of the second to cut a deficit to 46-42 midway through the period. That was as close as the Mustangs closed down the stretch, however, as Cal Poly limited UC Davis (10-8, 4-3) to a 41.1 (24-for-58) percent field goal mark and just five three-pointers in 18 attempts, but committed 20 turnovers.
Riniker, whose 18-point effort marked his highest scoring total at Cal Poly, also grabbed a game high seven rebounds.
Cal Poly continues action Saturday, Jan. 18, visiting Big West leader UC Irvine. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Cal Poly shot 50.0 (6-for-12) percent from three-point range during the first half and kept UC Davis to a 33.0 (10-for-30) percent mark from the floor, but the Mustangs trailed at the break, 31-26.
The Aggies opened up a 40-30 lead five minutes into the second half, but Cal Poly – courtesy of Jessup three-pointers on three successive possessions ahead of Riniker and freshman guard Cayden Ward knocking down efforts from beyond the arc – closed the disadvantage to 46-42.
UC Davis though kept Cal Poly without a field goal for the next five-and-a-half minutes to pull away.
