Cal Poly Falls Short at Home to LMU
9/5/2024 10:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior forward Kate Reedy buried her first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell to Loyola Marymount 2-1 on Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs (1-3-2) won the possession battle once again, but the match was fairly evenly played throughout. Cal Poly finished with a 12-11 shot advantage.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson made an incredible kick save in the seventh minute, but the Lions struck first in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal by Jennessa Groves.
LMU (3-2) carried that 1-0 advantage into halftime and doubled it in the 65th minute as the Lions snuck one into the bottom of the far left post.
The Mustangs weren't going down without a fight though and found a way to cut the deficit in half in the 76th minute on a remarkable connection between junior midfielder Brennan Cole and Reedy. Cole stood over a free kick on the Mustangs half of the field and rocketed the ball 65 yards to a screaming Reedy down the field who let the ball bounce twice before rocketing a shot to the top right corner of the net. For Reedy, it was her first goal of the season and the 10th of her career. It was Cole's first point of the season and the fourth assist of her career.
With a potential equalizer within sight, the Mustangs continued to press forward as sophomore forward Jaycee DeFazio fired a shot just wide of the left post in the 87th minute to earn Cal Poly's best opportunity down the stretch.
Wilkerson made four saves in her third career start in net. Redshirt freshman Courtney Wagner registered a team-high three shots in her third career appearance. Senior center backs Emma Brown and Aynsley Conner played all 90 minutes in the match.
Cal Poly travels to No. 12 Santa Clara (5-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday for its second to last road nonconference match of the season.

Didn't get the result we wanted tonight, but this goal from Kate Reedy tonight was simply incredible. What an absolute laser from Brennan Cole and Kate caps it off with a perfect finish top shelf ?? Onto the next ??#RideHigh???? pic.twitter.com/kGYIlqX2bA
