Smith Nets Brace, Mustangs Fall Short in Wild Battle at No. 12 Santa Clara
9/8/2024 5:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Mustangs (1-4-2) fell behind 2-0 seven minutes in, but found a way to battle back and level the match with the Broncos (6-1) not once, but twice.
Trailing 2-0, Smith got the Mustangs on the board in the 14th minute to cut into the early deficit. Junior Emily Lieber sliced a pass from the endline outside the box across the front of the goal and Smith was there to put it in. It was Lieber's second assist of the season and ninth of her career.
Less than two minutes later, Cal Poly knotted it up at 2-2 thanks to an incredible play between three Mustang starters. Vostermans found junior midfielder Brennan Cole at the top of the box about 25 yards out from goal. Cole settled the ball and then threaded a pass through the heart of the Santa Clara defense to find a streaking Penn in the box who chipped a ball over the Broncos' goalkeeper for her first career goal. It was Cole's second straight match with an assist and the fifth of her career.Annika Smith's first goal of the day was ?? However, just three minutes after the Mustangs leveled, SCU retook the lead on a goal from Shira Elinav. Cal Poly responded again though in the 30th minute on Smith's second goal of the day. Vostermans earned her second assist of the game and third of the season on the tally, pushing through the midfield and firing a perfect pass to Smith at the top box who sent a shot to the bottom left corner of the net.It was only a matter of time … Camryn Penn buries her first collegiate goal ??#RideHigh???? pic.twitter.com/ZUaUd2iTGi

Despite not generating a shot in the second half, Cal Poly desperately tried to find one last equalizer down the stretch as sophomore Jaycee DeFazio and senior Kate Reedy nearly connected on a cross right in front of the Santa Clara net.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel kept the Mustangs in the match throughout the second half, making six saves over the final 45 minutes. In the 71st minute, Samuel came out and made an aggressive kick save to prevent a goal by the Broncos and in the 83rd minute she dove to prevent a shot from sneaking in the right post. Samuel finished with eight saves in the match and is currently No. 9 on Cal Poly's all-time list in career saves (166). She also made her 49th career start in net on Sunday, fifth most all-time among Cal Poly goalkeepers.
Smith's two goals Sunday gave her three on the season and seven in her Cal Poly career.
The Mustangs' two starting center backs — senior captains Aynsley Conner and Emma Brown — played all 90 minutes in the match.
Cal Poly heads to TCU, who is receiving votes in the national poll, at 11 a.m. PDT next Sunday, Sept. 15, for its final road nonconference match.
