Cal Poly Shuts Out UC Riverside for First Big West Win
9/26/2024 11:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team secured its first Big West victory of the season Thursday night at UC Riverside, downing the Highlanders 2-0 at UC Soccer Stadium.
Graduate student Whitney Wiley and senior Kate Reedy both netted goals in the second half to propel Cal Poly (3-6-2, 1-1-0 Big West) to its fifth straight win against UC Riverside (2-9, 0-2 BW).
"It was a great team win," head coach Alex Crozier said after the match, "… it was one of those games that could have easily just ended up 0-0, but we fought hard and I'm real proud of the team."
After a scoreless first half that saw each team fire just three shots, Cal Poly came out with a purpose in the final 45 minutes and slowly started to break down the UCR defense. The Mustangs controlled possession for nearly the entire second half, but it was a counterattack that finally helped them break through and get one on the scoreboard.
In the 75th minute, senior center back Emma Brown headed a cross into the box by the Highlanders out of danger and the ball found its way to junior midfielder Brennan Cole. The Woodland Hills native sent a booming one-touch ball high into the air and over 20 yards over the midfield line where it bounced two times before Wiley caught up to it. The Vienna, Virginia native took a touch off her chest, dribbled forward and buried a shot to the bottom right post to earn her second goal of the season and give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. It was Cole's third assist of the year and sixth of her career, while Wiley tallied her 12th collegiate goal and third as a Mustang.
"I thought we played extremely well," Crozier said. "Riverside is very, very organized, had a lot of players back and we had a hard time breaking them down, but we stuck with it … and it was just going to take someone doing something, and Brennan popped a ball out on a counter."
The goal seemed to take the pressure off the Mustangs as they quickly began hunting for another goal in the final 15 minutes. Cal Poly's determination paid off in the 83rd minute as a ball played across the front of the net by Cole went off the arm of a UCR defender, giving the Mustangs a penalty kick. Reedy stepped to the spot and forcefully sent one to the back of the net to make it 2-0. It was Reedy's third goal of the season and her second straight match with a tally.
Cal Poly finished off a dominant second half showing with a 14-0 shot advantage over the Highlanders.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made one save to secure her 18th career shutout — tied for fifth most in Cal Poly history — and second of the season.
Cal Poly heads to Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. Sunday to cap a two-match Big West road trip.
