Cal Poly Falls Short at Cal State Fullerton
9/29/2024 7:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif. — Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel secured a season-high 10 saves, but the Cal Poly women's soccer team suffered a hard fought 1-0 Big West defeat at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at Titan Stadium.
With the loss, the Mustangs (3-7-2 overall) dropped to 1-2 in conference play.
The Titans (3-7-2, 1-1-1 Big West play) scored in the 15th minute and carried a 12-3 shot advantage into halftime, but in the second half the Mustangs came out with an increased intensity and looked determined to find an equalizer quickly.
In the 49th minute, junior Jessie Halladay whizzed a ball just wide of the right post. Then just six minutes later, Halladay blasted another chance from just the box on frame that was turned away by Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Mia Ranson, the 2023 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year. Junior Brennan Cole, redshirt sophomore Sophia Minnite and freshman Kiki Vostermans also fired shots as Cal Poly dominated play in the first 25 minutes of the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Then the Titans slowly started to take over control of the game in the closing moments, however, Samuel was intent on keeping the Mustangs in it, making six saves in the final 16 minutes of action. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Cal Poly couldn't find a way to level the contest and escape Fullerton with a point.
With the 10 saves Sunday, Samuel moved to No. 8 on Cal Poly's all-time list in career saves with 182. The San Diego native is currently ranked fifth all-time in matches played (54) and starts (53) among Cal Poly goalkeepers and tied for fifth in shutouts (18).
Senior center back Emma Brown made her 69th career start Sunday, tied for eighth all-time in Cal Poly history. Brown and fellow senior center back Aynsley Conner both played all 90 minutes in Sunday's loss.
Sunday's defeat snapped a two-match winning streak for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will look to get back on track when they host a pair of crucial Big West matches against UC Irvine on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m., and Long Beach State on Sunday, Oct. 6, at noon during Alumni Weekend for the program.
