Cal Poly Falls at Home to Anteaters
10/3/2024 10:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior center back Emma Brown climbed into a tie for sixth on Cal Poly's all-time career matches started list as the Mustang women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Big West foe UC Irvine on Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
Despite the scoreline, Cal Poly had plenty of chances to find the back of the net against the three-time defending Big West champion Anteaters (4-4-3, 2-0-1 Big West). The Mustangs outshot UCI 14-6 in the match.
Junior Brennan Cole had the most dangerous scoring opportunity of the night for Cal Poly in the 27th minute. Sophomore Annika Smith sent a cross near the endline into the box and Cole blasted a shot off the bottom of the crossbar.
Just three minutes later, freshman midfielder Kiki Vostermans fired a shot from 20 yards out toward the bottom left post and UC Irvine goalkeeper Ashley Naylor just got her right hand on it to poke it wide of the net.
The Anteaters scored on a header off a corner kick five minutes into the match and carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Cal Poly nearly leveled the match in the 68th minute. UCI fired a goal kick into the middle of the field and Smith rose up and headed the ball about 15 yards forward to senior forward Kate Reedy, who was streaking up the middle of the field. Reedy settled the ball and sent a shot from the top of the 18-yard box toward the center of the net, but the UC Irvine goalkeeper reached up and steered the ball wide of the net.
The Anteaters doubled their lead in the 76th minute and Cal Poly was unable to muster a response.
In addition to making her 70th career start and 73rd career appearance, Brown upped her consecutive matches started streak to 57. Reedy had a team-high four shots in the match and only 14 players saw the field for the Mustangs. Six field players were on the field for all 90 minutes.
Cal Poly (3-8-2, 1-3-0 Big West) remains at home to host Long Beach State at 9 a.m. Sunday as part of Alumni Weekend.
