Cal Poly Secures 2-2 Draw at Home Against Long Beach
10/6/2024 3:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior Jessie Halladay tallied a goal and an assist and graduate student Whitney Wiley buried her third of the season, but the Cal Poly women's soccer team was only able to secure a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Long Beach State on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs (3-8-3, 1-3-1 Big West) clung to a 2-1 lead for nearly 52 minutes of game time, before surrendering an equalizer to LBSU (5-6-2, 2-2-1 Big West) in the 81st minute.
The Beach struck first in the 24th minute, but Cal Poly quickly responded less than four minutes later to level the match at 1-1. Halladay received the ball in the midfield on an errant pass by Long Beach, sent a pass over to Wiley and the Vienna, Virginia native did the rest, firing a blistering shot from about 25 yards out over the LBSU goalkeeper and into the back of the net. It was Wiley's third goal of the season, fourth as a Mustang and the 13th of her collegiate career. For Halladay, it was her first assist of the season and the fifth of her career.
Just 1:39 later, Halladay scored a goal of her own to give Cal Poly a 2-1 lead. Halladay attempted a shot inside the 18-yard box near the right endline that was blocked by the arm of a Long Beach defender, giving Cal Poly a penalty kick. Halladay stepped to the spot and left no doubt, firing a shot to the bottom right corner. It was her second goal of the season — both by way of penalty kicks — and the seventh of her career. The time between Wiley's equalizing goal and Halladay's go-ahead goal was the fourth quickest time interval in program history (1:39).
Halladay nearly found the back of the net for a second time just before the half. In the 44th minute, Wiley sent a corner kick into the box that found the foot of junior defender Camryn Penn on the back post, who played the ball in front of goal where Halladay was waiting to cash in on an opportunity. With the ball behind her, Halladay attempted to back heel the ball into the goal, but a Long Beach State defender was standing on the goal line and denied Halladay a brace.
With a 2-1 advantage at the break, the Mustangs did their best to fend off the Beach and preserve the victory, but a ball played into the box in the 81st minute pinballed around before LBSU's Makayla Demelo sent one to the back of the net to level the match at 2-2.
On the ensuing kickoff following the goal, junior midfielder Brennan Cole tried to catch the Long Beach keeper sleeping, firing a shot from the midway line on goal. The shot was headed toward the top right corner of the net, but the Beach goalkeeper was able to reach up and poke the ball out and over the crossbar.
Despite the draw, Cal Poly outplayed LBSU for most of the match and won the possession battle. The Mustangs finished with a 13-9 shot advantage, firing eight of them on frame. Wiley led the team with five shots, including four on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made two saves in the match, moving her into a tie with Brooke Gauvin (2008-11) for the seventh most saves in program history (186). With Sunday's start, senior defender Emma Brown now ranks sixth on Cal Poly's all-time career starts list (71).
Cal Poly has now scored five goals via penalty kick this season.
The Mustangs will have an 11-day break in action before traveling to CSUN on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. to face the Matadors.
