Halladay Shines, Samuel Secures 19th Career Shutout in Win at CSUN
10/17/2024 10:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team returned to the pitch in an emphatic way on Thursday night, cruising to a 2-0 victory at CSUN thanks to a goal and an assist from junior Jessie Halladay and the 19th career clean sheet from senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel.
In their first match since Oct. 6, the Mustangs (4-8-3, 2-3-1 Big West) showed no rust as they came out eager to find the back of the net in the opening moments of the match.
Less than four minutes in, graduate student Whitney Wiley fired a blistering shot just wide of the left post off a great cross from Halladay. Just over two minutes later though, the Matadors (4-10-2, 2-3-2 BW) nearly found the back of the net when they attempted to chip a shot over Samuel. Fortunately, senior center back Emma Brown was there to clear the ball out of danger before it crossed the goal line.
Cal Poly's early possession domination paid off in the 22nd minute. Halladay sent a cross from outside the left side of the box toward goal and the ball took a deflection off the chest of a CSUN defender in front before senior forward Kate Reedy poked it into the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It was Reedy's fourth goal of the season and the 13th of her career.
Cal Poly carried the 1-0 lead and an 8-6 shot advantage into halftime.
After the whistle blew to kick off the second half of play, it didn't take the Mustangs long to double their lead. Just over three minutes in, senior outside back Dani Wozniak sent a pass over to senior forward Emily Nedom on the left who sent a perfect cross toward the front of the goal. Halladay rose up and headed the cross right into the back of net to earn her third goal of the season and the eighth of her career. Nedom secured her second assist of the season and third of her career on the tally, while Wozniak registered her second assist on the year.
The Mustangs fended off CSUN down the stretch as Samuel made three second-half saves to help Cal Poly grab its second Big West victory of the season. Halladay recorded a goal and an assist for the second straight match and now has 8 points on the season, tied for the second most on the team.
Samuel finished with seven saves to earn her third shutout of the season. The clean sheet moved the San Diego native into sole possession of fifth on Cal Poly's all-time career shutouts list (19).
With a start Thursday, Brown moved into a tie with Emily Hansen (2014-17) for fifth on Cal Poly's all-time career matches started list (72).
Cal Poly travels to Cal State Bakersfield at noon Sunday to wrap up a two-match road swing. With 7 points, the Mustangs currently sit in ninth place in the Big West standings but only trail two teams tied for fifth place by 3 points (one victory).
