Mustangs Fall Short at CSU Bakersfield
10/20/2024 5:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senior Mackenzie Samuel moved into a tie for fourth on Cal Poly's all-time career starts list for goalkeepers as the Mustang women's soccer team came up short 2-0 in a defensive slugfest at Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
With just three matches remaining in the regular season, the Mustangs return to Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium this coming week to host Big West leading Hawai'i at 7 p.m. Thursday and UC Davis next Sunday at noon for their final two home matches. You can purchase tickets to both matches at GoPoly.com/Tickets.
In Sunday's match at the CSUB Main Soccer Field, both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the first half as just seven shots were attempted between the two sides. Graduate student Whitney Wiley had Cal Poly's best opportunity in the opening half, blasting a shot from the left side of the box toward the far post that was turned away by the CSUB keeper in the 26th minute.
The Roadrunners broke the scoreless affair just over two minutes into the second half and added another on a corner kick in the 63rd minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Cal Poly attempted to muster a comeback down the stretch with a handful of quality chances on net. In the 72nd minute, Wiley was able to get a head on a free kick ball played into the box by junior Brennan Cole from just inside the midfield line, but the CSUB goalkeeper was able to reach down and save the ball before it slid into the bottom right post.
The Mustangs earned another dangerous scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute when junior Camryn Penn sent a ball into the box that sophomore Annika Smith headed toward the middle of the penalty area where Wiley headed a shot just wide of the net. In the 87th minute, senior center back and captain Emma Brown pressed forward in a last-ditch effort and rocketed shot from outside the box just wide of the left post.
Samuel finished with two saves in the match, giving her 195 in her career — seventh most in Cal Poly history. Brown made her 73rd career start in Sunday's match, currently the fifth most in Mustang history.
With 7 points (2-4-1 record), Cal Poly currently sits in ninth in the conference standings, but is only 3 points (equivalent to one victory) out of a spot in the Big West tournament.
