Cal Poly Downs First Place Hawai'i to Stay in Hunt for Postseason Berth
10/24/2024 11:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing in front of its largest home crowd of the season (1,018), the Cal Poly women's soccer team put on a show for the Mustang faithful on Thursday night at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium, handing Hawai'i — the first-place team in the Big West standings — its first conference loss with a 3-1 triumph.
Junior forward Jessie Halladay tallied a goal and an assist for the third time in the last four matches and junior midfielder Brennan Cole buried her second goal of the season to help Cal Poly (5-9-3, 3-4-1 Big West) snap the Rainbow Wahine's (10-7-1, 6-1-1 Big West) program-record nine-match unbeaten streak. With two matches remaining in the season — including a home match against UC Davis at noon Sunday — the Mustangs remain in the hunt for a spot in the six-team Big West tournament. Cal Poly currently sits in a tie for eighth place in the conference standings with Long Beach State at 10 points, and only trails UC Irvine and CSUN who are tied for sixth place by 2 points.
"I think the team definitely needed this," Cole said following Thursday's match. "We came out ready to battle, ready to play and I think it showed. Our first two goals were pretty scrappy and then the last one was just the cherry on top, so I'm really proud [of the team]."
Cal Poly struck first in the 28th minute on its sixth penalty kick goal of the season. Halladay drew a foul just inside the box and then stepped up to the penalty spot and fired a shot to the bottom left post to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage. It was Halladay's fourth goal of the season and third by way of penalty. Entering Thursday's match, the Mustangs were already one of the top teams in the country in penalty kick conversion percentage based on attempts and now they are a perfect 6-for-6 on the season.
The Mustangs doubled their lead in the 39th minute on an own goal by Hawai'i. After a Rainbow Wahine defender headed the ball off the goal line on an attempted shot by senior center back Emma Brown off a corner kick, Cal Poly earned a free kick about 30 yards out from goal. Graduate student midfielder Whitney Wiley stepped up and sent a dangerous ball into the box that a Hawai'i defender rose up and headed into the Rainbow Wahine net while trying to shield off sophomore forward Annika Smith. The referee originally called Smith offsides on the play, but overturned the decision after video review to allow Cal Poly to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs outshot the Rainbow Wahine 7-2 in the first 45 minutes, but Hawai'i cut Cal Poly's lead in half less than four minutes into the second half on a header in the box.
Despite surrendering a goal, Cal Poly didn't waver and responded with one of its own just over four minutes later. Senior forward Kate Reedy sent a perfect corner kick from the left toward the back post that Halladay headed toward the center of the box where a wide-open Cole was standing to head the ball into the goal. It was a set piece that was executed flawlessly, Cole said.
"I knew Kate was going to hit a good service," she said, "and when it went over my head, I was like I'm just going to frame the net, and it came right to me, and I just redirected. I didn't do most of the work I'd say, I just tapped it in. It was a good team goal."
It was Cole's second goal of the season and of her career. Reedy registered her first assist of the season on the tally, while Halladay recorded her third and now leads the team with 11 points this year (4 goals, 3 assists).
Cal Poly fended off the Rainbow Wahine over the final 36 minutes to keep Hawai'i off the board as Halladay nearly earned a brace on a shot she fired just over the right corner of the post in the 70th minute. The Los Gatos, Calif. native finished with a match-high five shots.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made five saves to surpass Greta Shirdon and move to sixth all-time in Cal Poly history in career saves with 200. Eight players played all 90 minutes for the Mustangs on Thursday and Cal Poly only used 14 players in the match.
Cal Poly hosts its final regular season home match of the season at noon Sunday against UC Davis (11-4-2, 4-2-2 Big West), who is in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings. Following Sunday's match against the Aggies, Cal Poly will hold a special postgame presentation to honor head coach Alex Crozier in his final regular season home match.
