Cal Poly Comes Up Short in Coach Crozier's Final Home Match
10/27/2024 6:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite finishing with a dominant shot advantage, hitting the ball off the woodwork multiple times and outplaying UC Davis for most of the match, the Cal Poly women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a hard fought 2-0 defeat to the Aggies on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The home match was the final in the illustrious career of head coach Alex Crozier, who is set to retire at the end of the season after 33 years leading the program. Serving as the only head coach in the history of the program, Crozier has helped the Mustangs capture 10 regular season conference championships and earn six NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure, and he has the most career wins among Big West coaches all-time, both in conference play (129-71-31) and overall (325-233-70). Following Sunday's match, Cal Poly held a special postgame presentation with video messages from a number of Cal Poly women's soccer alumni thanking coach Crozier for everything he has done for the program and university as a whole.Gallery: (10-27-2024) Coach Crozier's Final Home Game
In the 12th minute, graduate student Whitney Wiley nearly netted an Olimpico goal, curling a corner kick from the right side just past the left post.
UC Davis (12-4-2, 5-2-2 Big West) struck first in the 20th minute, but that didn't slow down the Mustangs as they continued to put the pressure on the Aggies' backline. Halladay blasted a dangerous shot on goal in the 22th minute that was turned away by the Davis keeper, and on the ensuing corner kick senior center back Emma Brown headed the ball off the bottom of the crossbar.
In the 44th minute, Halladay and Brown nearly found the back a net again just seconds apart. The UC Davis keeper just got a touch on the ball to steer a shot by Halladay off a cross from senior Emily Nedom wide of the left post and the following corner kick Brown headed a shot on goal.
Cal Poly carried a 13-3 shot advantage over the Aggies into halftime and possessed the ball for 68 percent of the opening half.
UC Davis doubled its lead in the 56th minute and sophomore forward Annika Smith and Halladay headed quality opportunities on goal down the stretch as the Mustangs fell in their home finale.
Brown, who made her 62nd consecutive start Sunday, had a career-high three shots while Halladay finished with a game-high six shots, including four on frame. Cal Poly outshot UC Davis 23-10 in the match.
Cal Poly (5-10-3, 3-5-1 Big West) heads to UC San Diego at 7 p.m. Thursday to wrap up the regular season. With several matches around the conference on Sunday still yet to be played, the Mustangs are currently not mathematically eliminated from the six-team Big West tournament, but will need some help from UC Irvine, Long Beach State and CSUN to earn a spot in the postseason.

In Sunday's match, the Mustangs were the aggressor early and often, generating a number of quality scoring chances in the opening moments of the match. Just over six minutes into the match, junior forward Jessie Halladay settled the ball in the box and fired a shot off the outside of the right post. We'll never forget you Coach ??#RideHigh???? pic.twitter.com/lGPhAlxVzX
