Cal Poly Rolls Past Pacific for First Win
9/1/2024 7:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
STOCKTON, Calif. — A penalty kick goal from sophomore Annika Smith in the 16th minute and an early second half strike from graduate student Whitney Wiley propelled the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Pacific on Sunday.
The Mustangs (1-2-2) dominated play and possession against the Tigers (1-4-0) to secure their first victory of the season.
Cal Poly was searching for a goal early and often in Sunday's match, and Smith cashed in on the Mustangs' aggressiveness in the 16th minute. Smith was fouled by Pacific goalkeeper Libby Davy on a dangerous scoring opportunity in front of the goal, earning a penalty. The Scottsdale, Arizona native then stepped up and buried the penalty kick to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. It was Smith's first goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
The Mustangs continued to press forward and kept the Pacific backline on its heels as juniors Brennan Cole and Emily Lieber, and sophomore Jaycee DeFazio all registered shots on goal over the next 25 minutes of action. Cal Poly carried a 1-0 lead and a commanding 8-1 shot advantage into halftime.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Cal Poly doubled its lead on a perfectly executed connection. After a few passes in the midfield that stretched out the Pacific defense, Lieber got the ball on the right wing, crossed up a defender, drove toward the endline and sent a pass right toward the penalty area. The ball went right between the legs of senior forward Kate Reedy and found the foot of Wiley, who blasted a shot to the bottom left post. The goal was Wiley's first of the season, second as a Mustang and 11th in her collegiate career. Lieber's assist on the tally was the eighth of her career and it was her first point of the season.
Despite the 2-0 scoreline, the Mustangs weren't satisfied and continued to look for more goal scoring opportunities. Senior Emily Nedom and sophomore Sophia Moness both registered shots on goal and in the 77th minute Smith nearly earned a brace, sending a header off a corner just wide of the net.
Cal Poly buckled down defensively down the stretch to preserve the team's second straight shutout. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made one save to secure her 17th career clean sheet.
2023 Big West Defensive Player of the Year Emma Brown played all 90 minutes and freshman Ashley Brewer made her first collegiate appearance in the match. A total of 26 players saw the field for the Mustangs on Sunday.
Cal Poly returns home to host Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m. Thursday as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer program. Then the Mustangs head to No. 10 Santa Clara next Sunday.
