SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly carried its first day momentum into a dominant sweep over Saint Mary's to open Saturday as the Mustangs hit an astounding .414%, which included a .556% second set that saw them take a 25-10 win. After two wins to start the tournament, it all came down to #19 Arkansas for the championship in which the Mustangs put up a valiant effort but eventually fell 3-1 to a well-rounded Razorbacks squad.

For the second match in a row, both Tommi Stockham (13) and Lizzy Markovska (11) tallied double-digit kills en route to a stellar offensive team performance. Building on her Friday showing, Emme Bullis collected a double-double with her game-leading 32 assists and 11 digs.
With just seven total errors in 87 attacks, the Mustangs seemingly solidified their footing as they headed into one of the season's toughest match-ups: #19 Arkansas.
Cal Poly utilized a collection of runs throughout the three sets, taking the first frame by going on a 10-2 stretch to finish 25-22, winning the second with three runs of at least four points, and finishing off the match with two large, multi-point runs.

The Mustangs came roaring out to a commanding, early 8-4 lead in the first set, putting Arkansas on its back foot. Although the Razorbacks fought back with five straight points to overturn the deficit, Cal Poly managed to keep up with them point-for-point in small scoring runs. With a game-high .290% team hitting and fantastic tag-team attacking effort from Tess Masingale and Tommi Stockham, the Mustangs were able to put together a 3-0 run in the final points to secure a set one victory.
From there, however, Arkansas thoroughly found its way in front. Cal Poly led for a good part of the second set's first half, but a 13-6 run through the final 19 points overturned the Mustangs and tied the set wins for Arkansas. The true momentum killer for the Mustangs came during the 25-16 third set in which they never led again after being up 5-4 early in the frame. Although the fourth and final set was a much closer battle, the #19 team in the nation retained a midway lead to close off the Mustangs and their tournament.
For the third consecutive match, Lizzy Markovska (13) and Tommi Stockham (12) led the team in kills with double-digit totals, while Tess Masingale - a new addition this season to the starting lineup at middle blocker - tallied 10 kills of her own. Taking over libero duties for day two of the tournament, London Haberfield blitzed her previous single-game high digs total with a new mark (23). Ella Scott led the game with a trio of service aces as well.
Looking Ahead
After a packed home tournament with three matches over less than a 48-hour span, the Mustangs now head on a countrywide road trip that will first take them to Alabama for a tournament jointly-hosted by Auburn and Troy. There, they will play the Tigers on Sept. 5, #20 Florida State on Sept. 6, and finishing with the Trojans on Sept. 7. Cal Poly will spend the entire month of September away from Mott Athletics Center before returning for its first conference home game of the season in October.
