Cal Poly Falls Short to Fresno State 1-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
For the second straight match to open their season, the Mustangs (0-1-1) outshot and out-possessed their opponent but were unable to emerge victorious.
Fresno State (1-0-0) scored the match's lone goal in the eighth minute as Jordan Lau headed a free kick that rang off the crossbar into the back of the net.
After conceding that early goal, Cal Poly started to settle down and slowly gained a grip on the rhythm of the match. Redshirt sophomore Sophia Minnite fired the only shot on goal for the Mustangs in the first half, and juniors Brennan Cole, Emily Lieber, Jessie Halladay and Camryn Penn all sent shots just wide of the frame.
Just seven minutes into the second half, Cal Poly thought they had leveled the match at 1-1 when graduate student Whitney Wiley fed a perfect pass from the midfield out to sophomore Jaycee DeFazio on the left side, who did the rest and blasted one to the back of the net. However, DeFazio was called offsides on the play and video review confirmed she was in an offsides position.
Despite the missed opportunity, the Mustangs continued to press forward and put the Bulldogs on their heels. Fresno State only mustered two shot attempts in the second half.
Unfortunately, Cal Poly was unable to find that finishing touch in the final third as a shot by senior Emma Brown from well outside the box in the 89th minute was covered up by the Fresno State keeper.
Cal Poly outshot the Bulldogs 9-8 in the match and had a 60-40 possession advantage.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson made her first career start in net for the Mustangs. The San Luis Obispo native secured five saves.
Freshman midfielder Kiki Vostermans, who assisted on Emily Nedom's goal in the Mustangs' 1-1 season-opening draw with Portland on Thursday, made her first career start, while freshman defender Lilly Cole started her second straight match. Freshman forward Avery Chaney also made her first career appearance.
Cal Poly caps off a three-match homestand to open the season Thursday, hosting No. 11 UCLA (2-0-0) at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
