Cal Poly Goes Toe-to-Toe with No. 6 UCLA, Falls Short 1-0
8/22/2024 10:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team fought valiantly and gave No. 6 UCLA everything they could handle, but the Bruins were able to escape Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium with a 1-0 win Thursday night.
"I thought our effort was great," Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said after the match. "We were on the wrong end of the score, but they're a very good team, credit to them."
The Mustangs (0-2-1) weren't intimidated one bit by the Bruins (3-0-0) and were on the front foot early in Thursday's match. Freshman midfielder Kiki Vostermans, making her second straight start, fired a shot less than two minutes into the match and junior midfielder Brennan Cole had a go from well outside the box in the 14th minute that went just wide of the left post.
UCLA had a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half, but Cal Poly controlled the flow of play in the opening half against the 2022 national champions. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made three saves in the first half.
"Going into the game we knew we had to have a very good collective effort, try to minimize space, deny the dribble … I thought the first half we did a very good job of that and had some good chances," Crozier said.
The Bruins started to pick up the pace in the second half and in the 70th minute UCLA broke through for the match's only goal as defender Lilly Reale struck a ball off the right post and into the back of the net.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs were unable to find an equalizer down the stretch as sophomore Annika Smith fired a shot on goal in the final minute.
Despite the loss, Crozier was extremely proud of the tenacity and resiliency the Mustangs played with and believes the team can build off this result against one of the best teams in the country.
"We're getting better every week," he said. "… We're already good, but we're going to be very good, very soon and hopefully that translates into some wins."
UCLA earned 3-0 victories over its other two opponents this season, but the Mustangs were able to contain the Bruins' vaunted attack. The Bruins finished with a 12-6 shot advantage and Samuel secured five saves.
Defenders Emma Brown, Aynsley Conner and Camryn Penn played all 90 minutes in the match and freshman defender Lauren Collier made her first career appearance.
Cal Poly hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Sacramento State next Thursday, Aug. 29, for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Hornets.
