Mustangs Secure Draw in Season Opener
8/15/2024 11:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Emily Nedom sent a beautiful strike to the back of the net in the 34th minute and the Cal Poly women's soccer team secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Portland in its 2024 season opener on Thursday night at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs outshot and out-possessed the Pilots, who they fell to 2-0 in Portland last season.
"We totally came out with a bang and I know Portland's a great team, but so are we," Nedom said after the match. "… They were really relentless and so were we, and I think we did a great job putting in max effort the entire 90 minutes."
Last season, the Pilots were ranked second nationally in shutout percentage and ninth in goals-against average, but the Mustangs' attack broke through Portland's pesky defense in the 34th minute. Freshman midfielder Kiki Vostermans fired a pass over to Nedom on the left wing, who slipped past a defender and fired a shot with her left foot from outside the box off the right post and into the back of the net. It was the fourth goal of Nedom's career while Vostermans picked up her first collegiate assist and point on the tally in her first appearance as a Mustang.
In the closing moments of the first half, Cal Poly nearly took a 2-0 advantage as junior Emily Lieber had a dangerous shot on goal in the 44th minute and sophomore Annika Smith headed one on frame in the final 30 seconds. The Mustangs outshot the Pilots 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
After the second half kicked off, it didn't take Portland long to equalize as Cally Togiai headed a cross into the top right corner of the net in the 49th minute to make it 1-1.
However, the Mustangs were unbothered by the score and continued to press forward with hopes of retaking the lead. Junior Camryn Penn was responsible for both of Cal Poly's most dangerous scoring chances in the second half. In the 56th minute, she sent a ball from well outside the left side of the box toward the right post, but the Portland goalkeeper just got a finger on it to force it off the post and out of the goal. Penn got another great look in the 71st minute, sending a ball toward the top center of the net that the Portland keeper was just able to poke over the crossbar and out of play.
Cal Poly finished with a 16-9 shot advantage over the Pilots, sending seven of them on goal. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel finished with two saves in her 47th appearance in net, and five field players never came off the field for the Mustangs in Thursday's match — seniors Emma Brown and Aynsley Conner, junior Brennan Cole, redshirt sophomore Sophia Minnite and freshman Lilly Cole.
Cal Poly (0-0-1) remains at home to host Fresno State (0-0-0) at noon Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
