SAN LUIS OBISPO – Four different Mustangs found the back of the Pacific net Sunday afternoon with freshman forward Finn Linas scoring twice as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program topped Pacific in an exhibition at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium, 5-1.
Pacific took Sunday’s initial lead in the 14th minute with Mustang junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune saving a penalty from forward Vinzent Zingel before a rebounded attempt was sent over the goal line.
Opening its 2024 training camp on Tuesday, Cal Poly equalized in the 26th minute as junior forward Luke Schaefer – the program’s leading returning scorer with four goals a year ago – took advantage of a Pacific turnover in front of goal, converting an errant pass into a level scoreline.
The Mustangs then surged ahead five minutes before the break with junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa’s corner finding the head of sophomore defender Joaquin Torres in front of Pacific’s goal.

Another headed goal – this time at the left post in the 72nd minute by Linas from freshman forward James Saggau’s cross – handed Cal Poly a 3-1 lead. Freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney furthered the advantage in the 79th with a second assist from Saggau before Linas capped the scoring and his brace 92 seconds from full time.
All four Mustang goalkeepers saw time Sunday with McCune recording Cal Poly’s lone save with his 14th-minute penalty stop.
Cal Poly enjoys one final exhibition tuneup on Saturday, Aug. 17, visiting No. 5 Stanford for a 7 p.m. exhibition.
The Mustangs open the 2024 regular season with a four-game road trip, starting on Thursday, Aug. 22 at San Francisco and continuing Sunday, Aug. 25 at Sain Mary’s.
