Mustangs Take Down Defending Big West Champion Hawai'i

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by a thrilling doubles point clincher and a handful of decisive singles victories, the Cal Poly women's tennis team rolled to a 5-2 victory over Hawai'i on Sunday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (8-7) avenged their defeat to the Rainbow Wahine (8-10, 5-2 Big West) in last year's Big West Championship match and improved to 3-2 in conference play to stay in contention for one of the top seeds in the Big West tournament that is less than three weeks away.
Cal Poly got off to a scorching start against the defending Big West champs thanks to some clutch play in doubles. Junior Eliza Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock coasted to a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot to move to 4-1 as a pairing this season. Then it looked like the doubles point was going to come down to court No. 2, but the Dunkle sisters had something else in mind. Trailing 5-2 and down 40-love in the eighth game, fifth year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle fought off three match points and rallied for a dramatic 7-5 win at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs. The duo won five consecutive games to improve to 11-3 on the season, 4-1 in Big West play and 26-11 together in their careers.
With 52 career doubles victories in duals, Delanie is now tied with Steffi Wong for fourth most in Division I program history and is only three wins away from surpassing Chelsy Thompson (2002-05) and Brittany Blalock (2007-10) for the most all-time.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse were in a tiebreaker in their match at No. 2 when the doubles point was clinched.
Cal Poly jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead thanks to some stellar play from Buntrock and LaMette in singles. Buntrock cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win in her first match of the spring at the No. 6 spot, while LaMette earned a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory in her first match of the year at the No. 4 spot.
Hawai'i made it 3-1 with a win at the No. 1 spot, but Mosse quickly closed the door on any hopes of a comeback for the Rainbow Wahine. She picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory to remain undefeated at the No. 5 spot this season and improve to 11-4 and 4-1 in conference play. It was her eighth straight singles victory.
Despite the dual already being clinched, sophomore Alexandra Ozerets (No. 3) and Peyton (No. 2) continued to battle for victories on their courts. Ozerets pulled out a gritty win in a super tiebreaker (7-5, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8)) to secure her fourth consecutive victory and improve to 10-5 on the season and 4-1 in Big West play.
Peyton fought until their bitter end in her singles match at No. 2 forcing a third set with a decisive 6-1 second set, but came up just short in the final set, falling 7-5.
The Mustangs return to the road this week for their final Big West regular season road matches. Cal Poly heads to UC Irvine at 11 a.m. Saturday and wraps up its trip to Southern California with an 11 a.m. match at Cal State Fullerton next Sunday.
