Mustangs Drop Tight Battle at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Junior Romane Mosse picked up her ninth consecutive singles victory, but the Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match at Cal State Fullerton on Friday 4-3.
Five of the six singles matches in the dual went to a third set.
The Mustangs (8-8, 3-3 Big West) opened the match strong, capturing the doubles point for the 11th time this season. Graduate student Melissa LaMette and Mosse rolled to a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot, and junior Eliza Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3, improving to 5-1 together this season and 4-1 in Big West play.
In singles, Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead thanks to a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory from Mosse at No. 5. With the win, Mosse improved to 12-4 this spring and 5-1 in Big West play. She is undefeated (8-0) while playing at the No. 5 spot this season.
The Titans (12-7, 4-3 Big West) won at No. 3 and No. 4 to level the dual at 2-2, but Buntrock put the Mustangs back in front with a thrilling come from behind victory at No. 6. Buntrock lost the first set in her match, but battled back to win the second and third, 7-5, 6-0. She moved to 2-0 at the No. 6 spot this season.
Then CSUF secured wins in three sets at No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the dual victory.
Fifth year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle each won the first set in their matches, while sophomore Alexandra Ozerets and LaMette each grabbed second set victories.
Cal Poly travels to UC Irvine at 10:30 a.m. Monday for its final Big West regular season road match.
